As Halloween approaches, the Carson City Sheriff’s Office and Carson City Health and Human Services department wants to remind everyone to stay safe while having fun. Here are some important tips to keep in mind for trick-or-treating:

• Check treats carefully. Always inspect candy and treats for tampering or choking hazards before eating. Stick to factory-wrapped treats and avoid homemade items from people you don’t know.

• Stay in groups. Kids should trick-or-treat with friends or a trusted adult. Never let a child enter a home without supervision, and only visit well-lit houses.

• Be visible. Add reflective tape to costumes and bags to make sure drivers can see you. Carrying a flashlight or glow sticks also helps.

• Use crosswalks. Cross streets at designated corners and make eye contact with drivers before crossing.

• Walk, don’t run. Stick to sidewalks and avoid running from house to house to prevent trips and falls.

• Wear safe costumes. Make sure costumes, masks, and shoes fit properly to avoid blocked vision or accidents.

For those celebrating Nevada Day at the parade, the sheriff’s office also offers these tips for a safe and enjoyable experience:

• Arrive early. Get there ahead of time to secure a good, safe spot. Plan your exit route to avoid heavy foot traffic when the parade ends.

• Keep kids safe. Teach young children to approach a Deputy if they get lost and agree on a meeting spot with older kids in case you get separated.

• Park smart. Choose parking spots that won’t trap you in traffic once the parade is over.

• Stay behind barriers. Always stay behind designated safety barriers and report any suspicious activity to the authorities.

• Plan for alcohol responsibly. If you plan on drinking, make sure you have a designated driver.

• Pack food and water. Due to crowds, access to restaurants or stores may be limited, so bringing your own snacks and water is a smart move.

• Dress for the weather. Be prepared for anything, from sun to rain or snow. Don’t forget sunscreen.

By following these tips, you can enjoy Halloween and Nevada Day safely with your friends and family.
