For the first time in school history, the Churchill County High School girls soccer team won the regular-season league title after sweeping a pair of Lyon County schools last week.
After a close 2-1 road win over Fernley on Friday, Fallon blanked Dayton, 7-0, on Senior Day on Saturday at the Edward Arciniega Athletic Complex.
Fallon improved to 17-0 with 51 points in the 3A East. Fallon will be the No.1 seed in next week’s regional tournament, which begins Monday with the quarterfinals.
Fallon travels to Lowry on Thursday to finish the regular season.
As the top seed, Fallon will host the No. 4 seed from the 3A West, which is currently North Tahoe. The semifinals and championship are in Fallon next Friday and Saturday. The top two teams advance to next month’s state tournament in Dayton.
On Senior Day, the girls program recognized Yasmien Leceste, Kaitlin Goings, Payton Oceguera, McKenzee Peterson, Syrianna Manciu, Ambreea Snodgrass and Emily Tenney before the game.
In Fallon’s 7-0 win over Dayton, Karlie Simper led the team with three goals, while Elizabeth Bergman, Keily Ugalde, Peterson and Leceste each added to Fallon’s lead.
The day before was a different story facing Fernley on the road.
Simper and Goings each scored for Fallon in the one-goal win, the Wave’s closest contest since a 2-1 Sept. 10 win in Elko.
Deadlocked at 1 late in the second half after Simper scored off a penalty kick, Oceguera found Goings 18 feet from the goal to knock in the winning score.
BOYS SOCCER
Like the girls, the Fallon boys soccer team blanked Dayton, 6-0, on Senior Day on Saturday and is in a battle for fourth in the 3A East with a 9-6 record.
Fallon, which lost to Fernley, 2-0, on Friday, hosts Lowry on Tuesday for the final game of the season.
On Senior Day on Saturday, the boys program recognized Manuel Desantiago Tapia, Alexis Alcaraz, Uriel Romero Montes, Anthony Gonzales, Edwin Ugalde, Josue Lopez, Yuvraj Choudhary, Josh Gusewelle, Diego Hernandez, Mason Storm and Chris Sanchez-Montes before the game.
The Greenwave are battling Fernley for the fourth and final spot for the playoffs.
Both teams have nine wins but the Vaqueros also tied Lowry, possessing a slight edge over Fallon. The playoffs use a points system where three points are awarded for each win and one point for a tie. Fernley leads Fallon by one point.
Fernley’s season is over, though, so Fallon needs to beat Lowry to advance or Fernley will lock up the fourth seed. Fernley or Fallon would then travel to the No. 1 seed from the 3A West on Monday for the regional tournament quarterfinals. The rest of the tournament is in Fallon with the top two going to state next month.
