Greenwave roundup: XC teams prep for Friday regionals

The Greenwave cross country team finished fourth in the boys division at the 5,000-meter Lowry Invitational on Saturday in Winnemucca.

Damonte Ranch won the seven-team division with 37 points while Fallon finished with 90. In the five-team girls division, Fallon finished last with 104 points as Elko won with 34.

Fallon will compete at the Class 3A Northern Region meet on Friday at Rancho San Rafael Park in Reno. The girls division will run at 10:40 a.m. followed by the boys at 1:10 p.m. The top four teams and top seven runners from teams that didn’t qualify will advance to next week’s state meet.

For the boys, Jackson Barbee medaled with a 10th-place finish after running the course in 18 minutes, 33 seconds. Michael Liston finished in 17th with a time of 19:52 followed by Lars Rasmussen, 18th, 19:58; Levi Bradford, 24th, 20:49; Takoda Pacheco, 26th, 21:28; Tayven Martinez, 27th, 21:30; Isaac Frederick, 28th, 21:48; and William McNeill, 42nd, 25:29.

For the girls, Casandra Hooper led the team with a 12th-place finish of 22:52 followed by Ellie Knight, 16th, 23:25; Melody Garcia-Bishop, 31st, 27:20; McKayla Taylor, 33rd, 27:50; Abigail Lacow, 37th, 28:38; and Zoe Rasmussen, 43rd, 33:02.


GIRLS GOLF

Fallon senior Charissa Chenoweth finished tied for 17th in last week’s two-day Class 3A state tournament at the par-72 Dayton Valley Golf Course.

Chenoweth, the team’s lone qualifier, carded a 97 last Tuesday before dropping to a 103 on the second day to finish with a total of 200 strokes.

Boulder City won the team title and low-medalist honors, beating Truckee 713-752. Emmerson Hinds won the individual title with a two-day score of 143 while Lowry’s Katie Cassinelli was the highest placer from the North as she finished third at 163.


TENNIS

The Greenwave boys and girls singles and doubles players couldn’t advance at Friday’s Class 3A Northern Region tournament at the Tahoe Donner Tennis Center in Truckee.

In the girls, South Tahoe’s Gabby Lancellotti blanked Fallon’s Angela Gonzales, 6-0 and 6-0. The Fallon doubles team of Ashlyn Jiminez and Jeana Lee, seeded eighth, fell to South Tahoe’s Greta Lynch and Piper Tennaci, 6-2 and 6-4. Fallon’s Eva Grondin and Abigail Gilman lost to No. 2 Sophia Killian and Riley Killen of Truckee, 6-2 and 6-0.

For the boys, singles player Riggin Stonebarger fell, 6-1 and 6-0, to No. 6 Liam Gillespie of Truckee. The doubles team of Misael Alcantar Vera and Jesus Sanchez nearly upset the No. 5 seed, Hug’s Ricky Pacheco and Aayan Sheriff. Fallon lost the first set, 6-4, but forced the tiebreaker after winning the second, 7-5. Hug won the tiebreaker, 7-3.
