Oasis Academy’s Meirra Cavanaugh came two strokes away from winning the Class 2A state girls golf championship last week at the par-72 Ruby View Golf Course in Elko.

In a battle with North Tahoe’s Addison Jones, Cavanaugh carded an 84 on Oct. 18 while Jones finished with an 82. Both golfers finished with a 94 on the second day as Jones won the tournament 176-178.

Teammate Olivia Kutansky finished sixth after scoring a 91 on the first day followed by a 101 the next day.

Incline won the tournament, 821-824, over North Tahoe.


CROSS COUNTRY

In the 5,000-meter Lowry Invitational on Saturday in Winnemucca, Leonidas Arcoraci led the Bighorns with an 11th-place finish after finishing the course in 18 minutes, 34 seconds.

Kamron Bracken finished in 30th with a time of 22:12 followed by Jay Frederick, 36th, 23:56; Chase Ackerman, 37th, 24:21; and Elijah Jones, 45th, 27:30.

Beatriz Hallberg led the girls with a 32nd-place finish at 27:39 followed by Kayla Greenberg, who ran a 28:55 for 38th.

Oasis Academy will compete at the Class 2A Northern Region meet on Friday at Rancho San Rafael Park in Reno. The girls division will run at 10 a.m. followed by the boys at 12:35 p.m. The top three teams and top-seven runners from teams that didn’t qualify will advance to next week’s state meet.


VOLLEYBALL

The Bighorns fell to Incline, 25-7, 25-16 and 25-15, last Monday at the city-county gym.

Oasis Academy (4-13), which will not advance to the postseason, finished the season on Monday against Yerington.

In the loss against Incline, Grace Laca led the team with four kills, and Taylor Hyde and Reese Laca each had two. Kaylin Guthrie finished with two aces and Hyde had one, while Abby Bird led the team with three digs. Hyde and Grace Laca each had two digs, and Hazel Mackedon and Reese Laca each added one. Laca and Dahlila Creer each dished four assists.
