SOCCER

The Greenwave soccer teams split against Lowry in the final regular-season game last week.

In a do-or-die game against the Buckaroos in Fallon on Tuesday, the Fallon boys recorded a 2-0 shutout to punch its ticket for the playoffs for the second year in a row.

Fallon (10-6) earned the No. 4 seed from the 3A East and travels to No. 1 South Tahoe (12-2-1, West) on Monday in the regional quarterfinals. In the other matches, No. 1 Elko (14-1-1, East) hosts No. 4 Incline (6-8, West), No. 2 North Tahoe (12-2-1, West) hosts No. 3 West Wendover (11-5, East) and No. 2 Spring Creek (13-3, East) hosts No. 3 Truckee (9-3-2, West).

The Lady Wave, though, fell to Lowry in Winnemucca, 3-1, as it came up short of a perfect league record.

Fallon (17-1, East), which clinched the league title last week and No. 1 seed, hosts No. 4 North Tahoe (7-5-2, West) in Monday’s quarterfinal match at 4 p.m.. In the other matches, No. 2 South Tahoe (11-1-2, West) hosts No. 3 Elko (14-2-2, East), No. 1 Truckee (12-1-1, West) hosts No. 4 Spring Creek (11-6-1, East) and No. 2 Lowry (15-2-1, East) hosts North Valleys (10-2-2, West).

The winners from the quarterfinal matches advance to Friday’s semifinal round in Fallon. The championship is Saturday followed by the state tournament next week in Dayton.

VOLLEYBALL

Ahead 2-1, Fallon dropped the last two games in a 25-17, 23-25, 22-25, 25-21 and 16-14 loss to Fernley at the Elmo Dericco Gymnasium. Fallon, though, rebounded with a 25-13, 25-18 and 25-20 sweep over Dayton the following day on Senior Night to end the regular season with a 6-4 record in the 3A East.

Fallon, the No. 4 seed, traveled to the 3A West’s top seed, Truckee (10-0), on Monday in the regional quarterfinals. Fallon defeated Truckee earlier in the season and was perfect against the 3A West’s four playoff teams.

In the other quarterfinal matches, No 1. Spring Creek (8-2, East) hosted No. 4 Hug (3-7, West), No. 2 Fernley (8-2, East) hosted No. 3 North Valleys (6-4, West) and No. 2 South Tahoe (8-2, West) hosted No. 3 Elko (6-4, East).

The winners from Monday’s quarterfinal matches advance to Friday’s semifinal round in Fallon. The championship is Saturday followed by the state tournament next week in Las Vegas.

FOOTBALL

A week removed from stunning Elko, Fallon finished the regular season with its third-straight win to clinch the No. 2 seed and first-round bye to the Northern 3A football playoffs.

Fallon’s 42-6 win over Lowry spoiled senior night for the Buckaroos, who are graduating 13 seniors. Fallon improved to 5-2 in the Northern 3A while Lowry dropped 2-5.

With the win, Fallon is off this week and will play the winner of No. 3 Elko (5-2) and No. 6 Lowry, who will battle on Friday. In the other quarterfinal, No. 4 Spring Creek (4-3) hosts No. 5 Fernley (4-3) two weeks after the Spartans upset the Vaqueros, adding to the chaos when Fallon also pulled off the upset over Elko.

Truckee (7-0) won the regular-season title and will face either Spring Creek or Fernley.

The regional semifinals are Nov. 8 with the winners advancing to the state semifinals on Nov. 15. The state championship is in three weeks.
