Douglas High’s Lucy Nord helped guide the Douglas girls cross country team to a state meet berth Friday at the Class 5A North regional cross country meet.

Nord, a junior, put together a time of 19:52 to take fifth place overall and was the first Tiger runner to cross the line at the meet.

The Tiger harrier said her goal for the regional meet was to finish inside of the 20-minute mark, which she was able to accomplish.

She credited her achievement to a tougher training regiment throughout the season.

“I’ve definitely focused more on mileage this year. I tried to keep my mileage higher than I have in previous seasons, which has helped a lot,” said Nord.

As a team, Douglas finished in third place, qualifying for this Saturday’s state meet in southern Nevada at Veterans Memorial Park in Boulder City.

The Tigers ended the meet with 67 team points, finishing only behind regional champions Galena (45) and Carson (50).

Sophomore Amy Van Wagenen was 11th overall this past Friday, posting a time of 20:58 while her teammate, junior Logan Axtell, took 17th in 21:27.

Freshman Krystle Dixon was right behind Axtell, completing the regional meet in 21:52 to take 19th.

Dixon was the quickest freshman in the field Friday.

Fellow Tiger freshman Taylor Chase took 21st in 22:34 and Douglas senior Ayla Nelson was the next runner to stop her watch in 22:56, taking 26th place.

Douglas sophomore Kira Northcutt was 50th for the Tigers.

Nord, who has quite a bit of experience competing at Rancho San Rafael said she’s always looking forward to the last stretch of the course.

“I like how it finishes on a downhill. I’d say that’s one of my favorite parts of this race,” said Nord. “There’s a fast finish and it feels like a fast course.”

As a team, the Douglas girls qualified for state for the second season in a row.

“I’m just excited to see how I do and how the team does,” said Nord.

TIGER BOYS FINISH SEVENTH, DAVIS LEADS CHARGE

Douglas High School senior Luke Davis led the Tiger boys cross country results this past Friday with an 11th place finish at the Class 5A North regional meet.

Davis completed the course in 17:08, averaging 5:33 per mile.

Fellow senior Sage Spencer was the next Tiger runner to complete the course, clocking a time of 17:43 to take 18th overall.

Both Davis and Spencer will compete at this Saturday’s Class 5A state meet in Boulder City.

Colin Hatcher (44th), Nathaniel Blair (45th), Noah Johnson (48th), Kyndall McGuire (49th) and Gabriel Barrington (50th) rounded out the Tiger results as a unit.

Overall, the Tiger boys took seventh place with 159 team points. Carson won the team portion of the meet with 34 team points.
