Dear reader, a recent article about guard dogs caught my eye because the cost of one particular dog was $150,000. The dog in question is a Svalinn and it has become a status symbol for very wealthy people.

The name Svalinn is from Nordic mythology signifying a shield that protects the world. The Svalinn breed is a secret mix of Dutch Shepherd, German Shepherd, and Belgian Malinois. The real selling point of this pup is that it’s the perfect loving family guardian that and can attack on command. In fact, these dogs are the 007 of canines.

Based in Livingston, Montana, the Svalinn kennels only sell 20 dogs a year and globally there are only 350. The training for these extraordinary animals is intense. Kim Greene, the owner, has past military experience and her methods reflect much of the training military dogs go through.

Her goal in training is to combine nerves of steel with absolute control and superb balance.

It takes two to three years to train each dog, and the expectations are high. Each trained dog will have faced many different situations and will have to triumph over each one. Not every dog makes it. The Phoenix is the training ground that challenges dogs to walk on thin planks, scale ladders, and attack. Svalinn’s philosophy is that dogs need rules, structure and are born to perform tasks.

One benefit of owning a Svalinn dog is that a handler will visit the home every 45 days to make sure the dog is working out. This commitment to maintain their training is phenomenal. To sweeten the deal they will pick up your dog if you are going out of town and deliver him back home when you return. Your ownership gives you the privilege of belonging to an exclusive club.

Perhaps the Svalinn’s price is a bit too steep for you but you still need the security of a guard dog. There are other breeders and trainers available and the price varies depending on the level of training and title. For example, a Level 1 German Shepherd’s price starts at $30,000, Level 2 at $45,000, and Level 3 at $65,000.

CAPS may not have guard dogs but we have an excellent variety of BFF’s waiting for a home.

Come out and meet a buddy.
