NOTICE OF AVAILABILITY FOR PUBLIC
COMMENT ON PROPOSED RUNWAY
SAFETY AREA IMPROVEMENTS WITHIN
A 500-YEAR FLOODPLAIN AND
SPECIAL FLOOD HAZARD ZONE
AT CARSON CITY AIRPORT,
CARSON CITY, NEVADA
The Carson City Airport Authority, as sponsor of
Carson City Airport, intends to replace existing
unpaved shoulders along both sides of Runway
9-27 with asphalt concrete stabilized shoulders
to reduce erosion that is occurring within the
runway safety area (RSA). The new shoulders
would be 10 feet wide. The surrounding infield
area would be re-graded (± one foot) to meet
Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) standards.
The applicable Federal Emergency
Management Agency (FEMA) floodplain
maps (Nos. 3200010103E and 3200010104E,
effective dates 1/16/2009) show that the
western one-fifth of the runway (1,200 linear
feet) is in Zone X, 0.2 Percent Annual Chance
Flood Hazard (i.e., 500-year floodplain).
Small portions of the infield subject to grading
could also occur in areas mapped as Special
Flood Hazard Areas. The affected floodplain’s
beneficial values include flood water storage
and conveyance.
Since the airport is seeking FAA funding and
approval of federal actions occurring in a
floodplain, a public notice and opportunity for
comment is being provided. The public may
submit comments on the proposed projects
and their potential effects on the floodplain for a
period of 30 days following the publication of this
notice. You may obtain more information or send
comments to Corey Jenkins, Airport Manager at
775-841-2255 or cjenkins@flycarsoncity.com.
FAA will consider all comments received during
the 30-day comment period before making an
environmental determination.
Before including your address, phone number,
e-mail address, or other personal identifying
information in your comment, be advised that
your entire comment–including your personal
identifying information–may be made publicly
available.
