Two days after the Carson City Board of Supervisors recognized a proclamation for National Preparedness Month, the fast-growing Davis Fire spreading from northern Washoe Valley triggered a multi-agency response, road closures, power outages and evacuations, testing the resolve of regional cooperation.

“Carson City Fire responded (with) one engine and one battalion chief on the initial dispatch through an automatic aid agreement with Truckee Meadows Fire,” CCFD Chief Sean Slamon said Monday. “Shortly after that we sent a second engine as well as multiple chief officers for command positions. We have had a total of eleven firefighters engaged in the firefight since Saturday. Our firefighters are doing well and were successful in saving numerous properties from the fire. During this time, we recalled off duty firefighters to staff our stations and we remain fully staffed and ready.”

Updated mapping shows the Davis Fire at 4,703 acres and no containment, according to a social media post by Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District Monday morning.

“600 fire personnel on scene. No change in evacuations. The fire held in most areas overnight. No containment. Wind gusts are expected later today,” TMFP said.

According to the agency, the fire started around Davis Creek Regional Park around 2:30 p.m. Saturday and has impacted 14 structures, though “damage assessment will continue when it is safe to do so.”

Carson Deputy Emergency Manager Jon Bakkedahl said the stables and corrals were opened at Fuji Park in south Carson for animal evacuations by 4:30 p.m. Saturday.

Bakkedahl added: “We have been housing 71 animals: 60 horses, 10 goats, and one donkey. Some have come and gone as they are having power turned on to wells and other evacuations are ordered. Many of the owners are here 24-7 caring for their animals."

Community donations have come from Lowe’s, Home Depot, Tractor Supply and COIT Restoration as well as grass donations from a Carson City family and the Nevada Department of Agriculture, Bakkedahl said.

Carson City Sheriff’s Office also assisted Saturday with six patrol units to evacuation areas and traffic control but resumed normal operations by midnight, according Bakkedahl.
