Greenwave roundup: Volleyball, girls soccer off to strong starts

For the first time in school history, the Wave volleyball team defeated Truckee, one of the most consistent volleyball programs competing in the Class 3A.

After dropping the first set, 25-23, Fallon rallied to win the next three, 25-21, 25-23 and 25-9, to stun the Wolverines last Wednesday across the state border. Fallon followed with a 3-0 sweep over Hug on Friday in Reno to close out 3A West crossover play.

Fallon hosts the defending Northern 3A regional champion, Elko, on Friday at the Elmo Dericco Gymnasium before taking on Spring Creek on Saturday in Fallon.

Raegan Johnson led Fallon with a match-high 17 kills to lead three players in double figures. Alexis Haggard and Halle Johnson each had 10 kills as Fallon bested Truckee, .284 to .165, in hitting percentage. Kendra Dodge added seven kills.

Lea Williams finished with a match-high three aces, and Vernita Fillmore, Layla Walker and Raegan Johnson each had two. Sutton Yost had one block solo and one block assist, and Johnson added a block assist. Fillmore and Williams each finished with 16 and 11 digs, respectively, and Raygen Bartel, Walker and Dodge each had seven. Fillmore’s match-high 37 assists gave her a double-double for the evening.

In a 25-22, 25-15 and 25-8 win over Hug last week, Raegan Johnson led the team in kills with seven, Bartel had five and Halle Johnson added five. Dylan Faught posted a team-high three aces as Fallon finished with 13, and Haggard led the team in blocks with two. Bartel and Williams each had a team-high nine digs, and Walker and Faught each added six. Fillmore finished with 19 assists.


SOCCER

Fallon’s girls soccer team swept a pair of Elko County schools on the road before shutting down a pair of Lyon County schools last weekend in Fallon.

Fallon (8-0, 3A East) has one game left against Lowry on Friday to complete the first half of the league season.

Karlie Simper’s scoring paced the Wave as she scored two goals in each of the four games.

She scored two goals from 9 and 17 feet out in Fallon’s 3-1 win over Spring Creek on Monday, while Jada Anastasio scored from long range, 67 feet from the goal. Simper scored from 24 and 36 feet away as Fallon nipped Elko, 2-1, on Tuesday.

Simper continued her scoring streak by adding a pair each against Fernley on Friday and Dayton on Saturday.

In Fallon’s 7-0 win over Fernley, Simper scored from 6 and 34 feet out, and McKenzee Peterson also had two goals from 39 and 70 feet. Payton Oceguera, Jazelyn Kratz and Yasmien Leceste each scored once.

In Fallon’s 7-1 win over Spring Creek, Karlie Simper scored from 13 and 57 feet while Leceste also had two goals, one from 4 feet and another from 23. Kylie Simper, Kaitlin Goings and Kortnie Simper each had a goal.

Fallon’s boys soccer team lost to Fernley, 1-0, last Wednesday in Fernley before defeating Dayton, 7-1, on Saturday on the road.

No individual statistics were available.

Fallon travels to Lowry on Friday.


CROSS COUNTRY

Fallon finished second in the boys division and third in the girls in Thursday’s Fernley Roadhill Invitational at Fernley High School.

Takoda Pacheco finished third overall after running the 5,000-meter course in 19 minutes, 49 seconds, and Jackson Barbee took sixth after posting a time of 20:10. Lars Rasmussen finished in 10th with a time of 22:19. Outside of the top 10 were Tayven Martinez, 23:31; Alexander Sorensen, 23:32; Michael Liston, 23:51; Levi Bradford, 25:06; William McNeill, 28:09; and Vernon Harper, 28:14.

In the girls division, McKayla Taylor led the team with an eighth-place finish after running the race in 29:54 followed by Rebekah Knight, who finished 1 second behind. Abigail Lacow ran a 30:57 followed by Zoe Rasmussen in 40:38.


TENNIS

The Greenwave boys tennis team opened the season with 10-8 wins over Sparks on Aug. 27 and Wooster on Aug. 29. Fallon, though, fell to Incline, 13-5, on Sept. 3 and Hug, 12-6, on Sept. 5.

The girls tennis team won by forfeit over Sparks but fell to Wooster, 11-7. Fallon defeated Hug, 10-8.

Team scores were not available for the Incline (girls only), Truckee and North Tahoe matches.

No individual statistics were available.
