Carson soccer escapes senior night with win

The Senior Night for Carson High boys soccer ended in some jubilee after junior Nathan Gutierrez deposited the game-winner in the 78^th minute to give the Senators’ a 2-1 win over Bishop Manogue.

While Gutierrez’s goal gave Carson a late victory, the result as a whole felt overshadowed by a game that quickly escalated past the point of confrontation in the second half.

Carson senior Johan Gutierrez and Bishop Manogue’s Beck Wilson were both ejected with straight red card in the 64^th minute after a shoving match broke out, following a whistle.

Four minutes later, a Miner defender was given a straight red card and ejected for a careless tackle on a Carson attacker breaking free in the attacking third.

All three will be suspended from their next scheduled contest.

“We had a different gameplan in mind all week and once we saw who we were playing and how they were playing, let me just say, we overthought it,” said Carson head coach Pedro Chavez.

Senior Kael Walt scored Carson’s first goal on the team’s second penalty kick.

The Miners also had a penalty kick in the first half, which was saved by Carson keeper Ellan Ortiz. 

Carson celebrated 14 seniors ahead of Wednesday’s game, prior to the antics.

“This is a special class for me because this is basically the first team I started with three years ago now. It’s emotional to see how they’ve grown over the last three years,” said Chavez.

UP NEXT: Carson (5-5-2) will get a week off before traveling to Galena (7-1-1) Wednesday.

SPANISH SPRINGS BEATS CARSON GIRLS SOCCER

The Cougars were able to pull out a 3-1 win over Carson girls soccer Tuesday in Sparks.

Spanish Springs got all three goals from junior Emma Frank.

UP NEXT: Carson (5-5-3) will travel to Minden Saturday to take on Douglas (3-6) for the first time this fall.

GALENA GIRLS SOCCER BATTLES PAST DOUGLAS

The Douglas High School girls soccer team fell at Galena Tuesday by a final of 7-2.

Reese Ballingham and Morgan Davis each tallied a goal in the loss for the Tigers.

UP NEXT: Douglas will host Carson Saturday in the first meeting this fall between the rival programs.

SENATOR VOLLEYBALL SWEEPS MCQUEEN

Carson High School volleyball rebounded from an earlier loss this season to the Lancers by beating McQueen on its home floor Tuesday in straight sets – 25-18, 25-23, 25-18.

Abby Franco led the Senators on the attack with 14 kills while Julie Salanoa had seven. Abby Pudilo and Abby Drysdale both had five kills each for Carson in the win. Drysdale led the team in blocks with three while both Franco and Salanoa had two each.

Franco posted a team-high 13 digs to go alongside Ava Kordonowy’s nine.

Salanoa had a game-high 23 assists in the win.

UP NEXT: Carson (13-3, 5-3 in Class 5A North league play) will host Bishop Manogue (13-8, 7-2) Monday in a league match that was rescheduled from earlier in the year.

CARSON GIRLS TENNIS HOLDS OFF DOUGLAS

Carson High School girls tennis scrapped its way past Douglas Tuesday in a 10-8 win over the Tigers.

Meryl Johnson and Aubrey McAllister we’re both 3-0 on the singles court for the Senators.

In doubles, Ava Schofield and Dahlia Keating also didn’t drop a set, taking three points. Betsy Campbell and Lainey Miller won the final point for Carson.

Douglas’ Cameron Coats, Kendall Cole and Kiley Girdner all won a set apiece in singles for the Tigers.

In doubles, the pairing of Ava Gildea and Annie Hill picked up two points while Charlotte Bonar and Jasmine Shoemaker also snagged two points.

Naomi Mackenzie and Anna Patmont also won a point in doubles for Douglas.

UP NEXT: Carson (4-4) appears to have locked up the four seed in the Class 4A North regional team tennis tournament, meaning the Senators will play at home Monday against No. 5 Galena (4-4). The Senators bested the Grizzlies, 10-9, in their lone meeting this season. Douglas (3-5) will be the No. 6 seed and will travel to the No. 3 seed, which is yet to be determined.

SENATOR BOYS TENNIS DEFEATS DOUGLAS

The Carson boys tennis team took down Douglas Tuesday by a 13-5 final.

In singles, Cannon Myler went 3-0 while Rowan Munoz won two singles points for the Senators.

Freshman Sujwal Reddy Yedunuthula picked up the Senators’ other point on the singles court.

In doubles, Halen Hoerth and Cooper Castillo won two of three sets to grab two points for the Senators.

The pairings of Ashton Wilkin and Ryker Russell along with Jack Pedersen and Asher Myler also won two sets each for the Senators.

Douglas’ five points were split fairly evenly with two coming from its singles players and three from doubles.

Abram Millward and David Alexander went 3-0 in doubles for the Tigers.

Brody Fontenot and Bryce Townsend each secured a point on the singles court for Douglas.

UP NEXT: It marks the final team match for both sides as the top six teams will make the Class 4A North regional postseason. The individual regional tournament will begin October 14.

DOUGLAS VOLLEYBALL SWEEP REED

Douglas High School volleyball swept the Reed Raiders in straight sets Tuesday – 25-10, 25-22, 25-17.

UP NEXT: Douglas (7-9, 4-6 in Class 5A North league play) will host Bishop Manogue (13-8, 7-2) Tuesday in Minden.

FERNLEY SWEEP DAYTON VOLLEYBALL

The Vaqueros bested the Dust Devils in Dayton’s most recent volleyball outing in straight sets – 25-21, 25-18, 25-20.

UP NEXT: Dayton (8-10, 0-1 in Class 3A league play) travels to Spring Creek (7-7, 2-0) and Elko (10-7, 2-0) for its next contests.

DAYTON SOCCER LOSES TO SPRING CREEK

The Spring Creek Spartans were able to defeat Dayton girls soccer last weekend by a 5-1 final.

The Dust Devil boys team lost to Spring Creek, 10-0.

UP NEXT: The Dayton girls (4-6, 4-5) will host Fernley (6-8-1, 5-3-1) Saturday at noon. The Dust Devil boys (1-10, 1-8) will be the first game Saturday, taking on Fernley (4-7-1, 4-3-1) at 10 a.m.

SIERRA LUTHERAN VOLLEYBALL SWEPT BY OASIS ACADEMY

The Bighorns bested the Falcon volleyball team in three closely contested sets last weekend – 28-26, 31-29, 25-23.

UP NEXT: Sierra Lutheran (2-6, 2-6 in Class 2A North league play) will host Yerington (9-12, 6-2) Friday and Coral Academy (4-4, 3-4) Saturday.
