The Greenwave softball team kept pace atop the league standings with Lowry after a three-game sweep over Dayton last week at the Edward Arciniega Athletic Complex.

Fallon defeated Dayton, 11-1, on Thursday and twice on Friday, 11-1 and 6-4.

Fallon, which is off until next weekend when it travels to Elko, improved to 5-1 in the 3A East to stay 0.5 games ahead of Lowry. The teams meet in Winnemucca in two weeks.

Junior Janessa Bettencourt pitched a one-hitter in Thursday’s win, striking out eight while issuing two walks and allowing an unearned run, which came in the first inning.

After the Dust Devils opened the game with a run, Fallon tied it in the first before pouring on five runs in the third, one in the fourth and four in the fifth to end the game via the mercy rule.

Sophomore Sutton Yost and senior Vernita Fillmore each had two hits with Yost also doubling and driving in a run. Bettencourt and sophomore Kalaya Downs each had an RBI, and senior Taralynn Vershum doubled.

Bettencourt followed up Thursday’s performance with a two-hitter in Friday’s doubleheader opener.

The junior hurler had identical stats compared to Thursday’s game: eight strikeouts, two walks and no earned runs.

Dayton didn’t lead in the game as Fallon had scored six runs before the visitors crossed the plate in the fourth inning.

Bettencourt helped her cause with two doubles, two RBIs and a single. Yost also drove in two on three hits, including a triple, and Fillmore singled twice and drove in one. Senior Dana Buckmaster and sophomore Audrey Fruzza each singled.

In the two-run nightcap win, Fallon battled from a 3-0 hole by scoring two runs in the fifth and four in the sixth to take its first and only lead of the game.

Fillmore pitched all seven innings, striking out 11 while walking one and giving up eight hits. All four runs were unearned.

Downs had the only multi-hit game as she singled twice, and Buckmaster drove in three and doubled. Vershum singled and had an RBI, and sophomore Hayden Dooley, Fruzza, Fillmore and Yost each singled. Bettencourt also had an RBI.

Fillmore scored on a fielder’s choice in the fifth inning to get Fallon on the board before Downs scored on another fielder’s choice. Fallon took the lead when Buckmaster doubled in Dooley and Fruzza the next inning. Buckmaster scored on a wild pitch followed by Downs crossing the plate on an outfielder error.
