The Nevada State Police identified a 38-year-old Carson City man, Eric Burns, as the person killed in a crash on Galena Creek Bridge on Feb. 7.
In a Feb. 11 news release, state officials said the Nevada Highway Patrol first responded to a report of a crash on the bridge in southern Washoe County around 8 a.m. Feb. 7.
“The preliminary investigation indicates that a 2017 Subaru WRX was traveling northbound on IR580 approaching a prior crash,” according to NSP. “A Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District fire engine was parked on the scene of the prior crash with its emergency lights activated, partially in the number three travel lane and right paved shoulder.
“The driver of the Subaru was operating the Subaru at a speed too fast for the current roadway conditions. The driver of the Subaru lost control, and the Subaru began to rotate. The left side of the Subaru struck the rear corner of the fire engine.”
Burns was pronounced dead at a local hospital, NSP said.
“There were no injuries to firefighters or other personnel on scene,” the release said. “The Nevada Highway Patrol Region Two (Northern Command) Traffic Homicide Unit is investigating this crash.”
Year to date, NHP Region Two has investigated five fatal crashes, resulting in five fatalities. The data is preliminary and may change based on final investigation and coroner reports, the release said.
