A spokesperson for Joann Fabrics and Crafts on the east side of the Carson Mall confirmed Wednesday the store was set to close as part of mass closures throughout the U.S.
Employees at the store found out Wednesday and did not know an exact date of closure, according to the spokesperson, but expected bargain sales in the coming week.
USA Today reported that more than half of 800 Joann stores nationwide would be closing following the retailer’s voluntary Chapter 11 filing in January.
“Since becoming a private company in April, the board and management team have continued to execute on top- and bottom-line initiatives to manage costs and drive value,” Michael Prendergast, interim CEO of Joann, said Jan. 15. “However, the last several years have presented significant and lasting challenges in the retail environment, which, coupled with our current financial position and constrained inventory levels, forced us to take this step.”
The Reno store will remain open, according to the Carson spokesperson, and employees would have the prerogative to transfer. Not disclosed was whether employees choosing not to transfer would receive severance pay.
“I am (sad) because I always come here before I go to Michaels,” Carson resident Marta Marsh said outside Joann on Wednesday. “I hate to hear this.”
Marsh was concerned about brick-and-mortar retail options in the city given a spate of closures. Burlington Coat Factory in south Carson closed in April 2024 followed by nearby Big Lots. The latter closed Jan. 26 after that company sought bankruptcy protection, the Reno Gazette Journal reported.
At the same time, Marsh was hopeful Hobby Lobby would take over the Burlington suite as previously planned. Remodeling work on the former Burlington suite was visible Wednesday, and a sign along South Carson Street said Hobby Lobby would be coming, though an exact opening date was unknown.
