Friday night, the fourth-seeded Dayton High School boys basketball team was matched up with top-seeded Spring Creek in the semifinal of the Class 3A North regional playoff.
The Dust Devils lost to the Spartans 67-56 after an 18-6 second quarter in favor of the Spartans shifted the tone of the contest.
Spring Creek had won the previous two meetings this season 64-42 and 70-43.
Dayton made it into the regional semifinal after downing Wooster in the opening round, 62-47.
Fernley went on to beat Spring Creek in the boys 3A North regional final, 44-43, Saturday.
SENATOR GIRLS LOSE AT RENO
It was going to be an uphill battle from the start for Carson High School girls basketball as the seventh-seeded Senators traveled to No. 2 Reno on Wednesday.
The Huskies had put up two big wins over Carson, but were missing one of their key starters to injury for the Class 4A North quarterfinal.
Reno was still too strong, winning 62-33 and ending the Senators’ season.
Early on, Carson looked like it was going to be able to hang with the Huskies after Lauren Finnerty hit a deep two and followed with a crossover in the corner that allowed her to get to the rim on the Senators’ next possession.
An Emjae Salanoa offensive rebound led to a Finnerty triple, bringing Carson within three, 14-11, late in the first quarter.
However, the Huskies outscored the Senators 30-12 over the next two quarters, pulling away for the postseason win.
Reno freshman Brookesly Wilson went to work in the second half.
“A lot of shots didn’t fall for us in that second quarter. When we stuck to the game plan in the first half we were really able to hang with them,” said Carson High girls head coach Sam Golden. “They (Reno) did a great job adjusting to our (new) defense. It was a box-and-one type.”
Carson finishes the season with a 9-16 record overall.
