The Carson City Fire Department is taking steps to enhance wildfire prevention and preparedness in the Goni community of northeast Carson.
A community workshop is slated for 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Fire Station No. 52 located at 2400 College Parkway.
“Carson City Fire Department in cooperation with Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District applied and was awarded federal funds from the Bureau of Land Management for the Community Fire Assistance Program to address the threat of wildfire in the communities of northeast Carson City and New Washoe City/east Washoe Valley,” according to CCFD. “These areas have been assessed as a high risk due to an increased accumulation of wildland fuels around homes throughout the communities.
“To prevent a catastrophic wildland-urban interface fire likely resulting in loss of life and severe property and infrastructure damage, fire prevention and fuels reduction must be a priority in these communities.”
The program could help hundreds of properties, according to CCFD. Free services include defensible space inspections, removal of dead vegetation, installation or improvement of firebreaks and removal of brush along roadways and driveways.
CCFD maintains one outcome of the program is “strengthening the resilience of communities against the increasing frequency and intensity of wildfires by implementing sustainable, science-based strategies for fuels management and fire prevention.”

July 2024 was also the 20th anniversary of the Waterfall Fire in west Carson that destroyed 18 homes.
“Whether natural, human-caused or technological, the impacts are personal, environmental and financially devastating to communities,” Kimberly Fahey, wildland fuels manager for CCFD, said by email. “In Carson City, our greatest threat is wildfires. These devastating fires can happen at any time of year.
“It’s a collective effort of individual homeowners, neighborhood initiatives and government programs working together to keep our community safe. I encourage residents in northeast Carson to attend Tuesday's workshop to learn about this new fuels reduction program, wildfire preparedness/evacuation and how they can reduce the threat of catastrophic wildfire in their neighborhood.”
