The Carson City Sheriff’s Office has identified Michael Bright, 64, of Carson City as the man who was killed in an officer involved shooting on New Year’s Eve.

In a video released on Saturday, Assistant Sheriff Jim Primka walked through the timeline of events that took place on Old Clear Creek Road just north of the Douglas-Carson line.

Officers were called to a verbal domestic dispute at 10:34 p.m. on New Year’s Eve. When deputies arrived they learned the man had texted he would “shoot it out” with deputies if they responded. He made threats to law enforcement and the witness, Primka said.

He also was known to be in possession of a weapon.

A few minutes before midnight, the man returned to the scene where deputies tried to contact the man. There was an exchange of gunfire before Bright barricaded himself in a pickup.

Douglas County Sheriff’s deputies, Washoe Tribe Police and Carson City Fire Department and tactical paramedics were called to the scene.

“From 11:55 p.m. to 12:15 a.m., deputies attempted to negotiate with the suspect from a distance, but the barricaded suspect refused all instructions,” Sheriff Ken Furlong had previously said. “At approximately 12:17 a.m., the suspect emerged from his barricaded vehicle position reportedly armed with a handgun and a second shooting took place. Tactical paramedics attempted to render immediate medical aid to the suspect but determined he was dead at the scene.”

No other injuries were reported. The man was released to the Carson City Coroner for transfer to the Washoe County Medical Examiner for an autopsy.

In accordance with officer-Involved shooting protocol, the Nevada State Investigations Division assumed responsibility for the criminal investigation, while the Carson City Sheriff’s Office conducts its own internal affairs investigation into the matter.

Five deputies and two sergeants were placed on standard administrative leave following the shooting. None of the officers were injured in the incident.
