RELATED STORY: Eagle Valley Publishing purchases Nevada Appeal, Lahontan Valley News
Are you crazy?
You are nuts.
Print is dead.
Those were some of the responses I received upon breaking the news that I was purchasing the products that I have spent more than 15 years working on.
The simple answer is that I may be crazy, but I believe.
I believe in our communities.
I believe in local journalism.
I believe in our mission.
I believe in the team members at the Nevada News Group.
And most of all I believe the work we do matters.
Eagle Valley Publishing is the new owner of the Nevada Appeal, The Record-Courier, the Lahontan Valley News and the Northern Nevada Business Weekly. The publications operate under the Nevada News Group umbrella.
Eagle Valley Publishing is my company. There are no outside influences.
It is locally owned. It is locally operated.
Editor Kurt Hildebrand told me the last time The Record-Courier was locally owned was in 1988, when Don Woodward sold it to Swift Communications. The Appeal was last locally owned in 1993.
My goal with ownership is to keep serving our communities with local news and information.
My long-term fear was watching Northern Nevada become a news desert with no papers of record, no local reporters, no local news and information and no government watchdogs.
Changes
With any change in ownership the biggest question is what is changing?
The simple answer is hopefully nothing. The mission is that these publications continue to be operated out of Northern Nevada by team members who are based in Northern Nevada.
More and more in this day of media, publications are sold to be conglomerates that consolidate. First there’s no local office and then there’s no local reporters and then there’s no local news.
That is not the case. We have offices in Carson City and Minden. Our team members are local.
We are the definition of a Northern Nevada-based small business.
You will see some changes in branding in the Nevada Appeal, but those changes are more related to the Appeal preparing to celebrate 160 years of publishing (May 16), than the change in ownership.
You will see other branding changes in The Record-Courier, the Lahontan Valley News and the Northern Nevada Business Weekly but the content, team members and faces who work daily on those products will not change.
The changes being made are internal, mainly to free up some time for myself to focus on other aspects of the business than editorial and production. As we finalize structure changes I will be sure to update you.
Meet the owner
I had my first professional byline in a paper at the age of 17. I started working full-time for newspapers at the age of 18. I graduated from Central Michigan University with a degree in journalism in 2005. After two years in Alpena, Mich., I came West. I have been at the Appeal since 2007. I was named editor of the Appeal in 2014 and started working on the other publications and with advertising production in 2016.
I love Northern Nevada and all that it offers. It is my home and I have no thoughts on leaving.
I am married. In my free time I enjoy golfing and gardening. My wife and I answer to our two Maine Coon cats, who will continue to serve as president and vice president of the house and Eagle Valley Publishing. We also have a 16-month old dog named Sgt. Pepper. Sgt. Pepper will serve as chief fur officer of Eagle Valley Publishing.
