Dear reader, it occurred to me in the middle of a nasty headache that pets might also have headaches. I hadn’t read a great deal about animals and headaches so I did a little research.

It seems that humans are not the only creatures with the problem.

Cats and dogs can get headaches, however it is difficult to diagnose the condition in pets because they can’t communicate their pain verbally. Headaches in animals are often associated with other health concerns and there isn’t a great deal of research specifically addressing headaches.

Dogs can get headaches from head injuries, brain lesions, dehydration or eating processed dog food. Some of the symptoms to watch for are head pressing, shaking, whining, avoiding bright lights or loud noises. Other things to indicate problems are changes in behavior, disinterest in food, lethargy, and sensitivity to touch.

Cats with headaches may experience nausea and vomiting, temporary blindness and behavioral changes. Because dogs and cats have heightened senses of smell and hearing, it is possible that they are more sensitive to headache-causing stimuli. Perhaps the reason pets are anxious around thunder or fireworks is that they are experiencing a headache.

To help your dog with a headache, create a quiet, cool, dark resting place, give them space, and avoid petting. For a cat, take them to the veterinarian as quickly as you can for proper treatment. Never give Tylenol or aspirin to your pet. Veterinarians will be able to prescribe specific pain medication for them. Seeing your BFF in pain causes heartache but hopefully the right diagnosis can bring relief.
