The Carson High School wrestling team finished third last weekend at the Centennial Bulldog Grappler tournament in Las Vegas.
The Senators had 120 points, behind Centennial (159) and Foothill (174) out of 16 teams.
At 113 pounds, Jesse Oliva earned a spot at the top of the podium, going unbeaten.
Olivia won his first three rounds by fall, finishing each match in 1:27, 0:22 and 3:52 to punch his ticket into the finals.
In the title match, the senior won by major decision, 16-4.
“He put it on a kid from Sierra Vista. From the first whistle, there was no doubt he was going to win that match,” said Carson head coach Nick Redwine. “Jesse goes into matches kind of feeling out guys and then he will explode into a fury of offense. … It’s constant pressure. He’s constantly moving in and looking to score. … Probably right now our best overall wrestler on the team just because of his ability to score from anywhere.”
Oliva holds a 19-7 record this season, per TrackWrestling.
Konnor Crisp took second place at 175 pounds, defeating his first three opponents by pin in less than a minute.
In the finals, Krisp fell to Brock Bonkavich from Bishop Gorman by major decision, 16-4.
Heavyweight Dominic Porter took second place with three victories by fall until a decision loss, 15-9, in the finals to Benjamin Young of Desert Oasis.
Izaiah Oliva took third place at 215 pounds, wrestling back with two wins after a loss in the semifinal.
Izaiah Oliva won his three matches by decision (9-2), pin (2:52) and major decision (16-7).
Keona Basa was fourth at 126 pounds with a 2-2 clip and two wins by pin.
The two-day tournament started with a team dual on day one in which Carson went 2-2.
CHS beat Desert Pines (66-12) and SLAM Nevada’s B team (42-34), but fell to Foothill (43-28) and Arbor View (40-39).
“We just had kind of a lapse against Foothill. … It was a really close tight dual (against Arbor View) and just came up one point short there,” said Redwine. “I’m proud of the kids for getting third place. We are wrestling really well in spots and in other spots we are still trying to figure it out.”
UP NEXT: Carson wrestling got its first taste of league dual action Tuesday at Galena, taking on the Grizzlies and Spanish Springs. The Senators will host their Senior Night dual Wednesday, Jan. 15 against Reed and Reno.
HOPKINS WINS AT SPARKS INVITE
The Carson High girls wrestling team went to Sparks over the weekend and had a wrestler come away with a top finish.
Lily Hopkins took was first at 144 pounds with a 3-0 tournament, winning all of her matches by pin.
“She’s really good on her feet and from neutral position,” said Redwine. “She’s still a brand new wrestler. Being on your feet game, that’s what takes forever for kids to figure out, usually. She’s got that pretty down and a couple of really solid techniques on her feet.”
