Several strike teams from Northern Nevada and the Sierra region were headed south Wednesday as catastrophic wildfires continued to burn in Southern California.

“Two more strike teams have been sent out from Northern Nevada to the L.A. area,” Carson City Fire Department Chief Sean Slamon said via email. “Carson City has one fire captain going as a strike team leader (command officer).”

Slamon added: “They are going to the Eaton Fire. Minimum commitment time for these events is 14 days unless they get control of the fire before that. The winds are predicted to be more favorable starting tomorrow, but that can change quickly.”

According to Cal Fire, the Palisades Fire and Eaton Fire, both in Los Angeles County, had consumed more than 25,000 acres by Wednesday afternoon. The fires, among other blazes, started Tuesday, and their respective causes were still under investigation.

The Associated Press reported strong Santa Ana winds were driving flames, causing mass evacuations and cancellation of events throughout Los Angeles.

The AP also reported an estimated 1,000 structures had been destroyed by the Palisades Fire alone. Cal Fire showed zero containment for the Eaton and Palisades fires as of 1:30 p.m. Wednesday.
