The vacant Carson Tahoe Hotel at 800 N. Carson Street has a new owner, but Carson City officials did not know what projects or operations were planned for the property as of Jan. 7.

“The city has not received any building permit application for the property at 800 North Carson Street since 2018. The city is aware of the recent change in ownership. As the new owner has not applied for ministerial or discretionary permits, the city does not know what the property owner’s intentions are for the property,” Hope Sullivan, director of Community Development, said Tuesday.

The nearly 38,000-square-foot, four-story structure (formerly known as the City Center Motel) was constructed in 1966, according to the Carson City Assessor’s website.

The property was headed to public auction for delinquent property taxes, a measure approved by the Board of Supervisors on Nov. 21 of last year, but outstanding taxes totaling $111.890.53 were paid on Nov. 27, according to a deed of reconveyance.

The same day the taxes were paid, the sale of the property was recorded. According to the assessor’s site, Capitol City Hotel NV LLC purchased the property for $3 million from Jennifer Bernard, Gregory Maffi and Terry Maffi.

Despite plans in 2022 to rebrand the hotel for a national franchise, the hotel has been inactive since February of that same year, Visit Carson City officials told the Appeal.

A major project review at the site for apartment conversion was submitted to the city on Aug. 21, 2024, but no permit applications materialized from the submittal, as of Jan. 7, and that was before the change in ownership.

Community Development officials confirmed a stop work order was issued Dec. 4, 2024, for interior demolition without a permit. Work stopped, and in the following weeks, a fence was installed around the property.

The Nevada Secretary of State’s Office lists the managing members of the new owning company as Balbir Gosal and Baldev Johal, both with Reno addresses.
