Carson High School boys basketball rebounded from a Monday loss to Reed (51-48) with a 48-46 win over Galena on Wednesday night.

Thirty-one of the Senators’ 48 points came in the second half. Senior Japheth Banko led the charge for Carson in the final moments, capitalizing on a steal and converting a layup on the other end to put the Senators in front 47-46 with 15 seconds to play. Banko ended the evening with 18 points. 

Galena had a chance to score in the final moments but stepped on the baseline for a turnover.

In the loss to Reed, Carson had possession and attempted a 3-pointer in the final seconds, but it didn’t fall.

Landon Hoff finished with nine points for Carson while Ethan Cook and Issac Chambers each added seven points of their own. 

UP NEXT: Carson (6-10, 1-5 in Class 4A North) was back at home Friday against Bishop Manogue (8-8, 4-3). Monday, Jan. 13, the Senators will travel south to Minden to take on Douglas (6-9, 3-4).


CARSON GIRLS BEAT GALENA IN OT

The Carson High School girls basketball team saw its fair share of drama in the final moments of its Wednesday night league game at Galena.

The Senators used a 16-10 fourth quarter to force overtime at 60-60 before outscoring the Grizzlies in the extra period 10-4 for a 70-64 win.

Tied at 64, sophomore Emjae Salanoa went to the free-throw line, converting the first of two shots. Despite a missed second free throw, the Senators were able to recover a loose ball before it went out of bounds and put it in the hands of Salanoa, who drilled a 3-pointer from the wing to put Carson in front by two possessions, 68-64.

The sophomore finished with 17 points.

Makayla Rabideau sank the final two free throws as the Senators held on for the win.

Camryn Galloway had 14 points for Carson while Dahlia Keating put together 13 points of her own.

Galena’s Julia Imse posted a game-high 38 points for the Grizzlies two days after scoring 21 points in a loss to Douglas.

Monday night, Carson fell to Reed, 53-33.

UP NEXT: Carson (6-8, 2-4 in Class 4A North) was back in action on its home floor Friday evening against Bishop Manogue (7-8, 4-3). Monday, the Senators travel south to Minden for their first matchup with Douglas (6-8, 2-4).


CARSON WRESLTING SPLITS LEAGUE DUAL

The Senator wrestling team competed at Galena on Wednesday night in a triangular league dual against the Grizzlies and Spanish Springs.

Carson beat Galena, 38-32, behind wins by pin from Jesse Oliva (113 pounds), Konnor Crisp (175) and Dominic Porter (285).

Damian Porter added a win by technical fall (19-3) at 165 pounds while Keona Basa secured a 14-13 decision win at 126.

In their second league dual of the night, Carson fell to annual powerhouse Spanish Springs, 69-11.

Ethan Linehan had a win by pin at 190 pounds in 3:55 while Oliva won by technical fall (18-1).


DAYTON GIRLS FALL TO FERNLEY

Late last week, Dayton High School girls basketball fell at the hands of Fernley, 60-22.

Lisinita Tulimafua-Curran had a team-high eight points for the Dust Devils. Senior Kennedi Smith added six points for Dayton.

UP NEXT: Dayton (1-8, 0-1 in Class 3A league play) traveled to Spring Creek (6-6, 0-2) on Friday night before going out to Elko (5-7, 0-2) for a Saturday tip-off.


DUST DEVIL BOYS DROP 3A GAME

After a five-game winning streak through half of December, the Dayton High School boys basketball team dropped its second contest against Fernley in as many meetings.

Last weekend, the Dust Devils fell 54-30 after a 41-29 win over Owyhee to close December.

UP NEXT: Dayton (10-3, 0-1 in Class 3A league play) will travel to Spring Creek (10-5, 2-0) and Elko (7-7, 1-1) this weekend.


FALCON BOYS HOOPS DROPS N. TAHOE GAME

The Sierra Lutheran boys basketball team came out on the losing end of a league game against North Tahoe last weekend, 47-31.

UP NEXT: The Falcons (3-8, 2-5 in Class 2A league play) went to Incline (6-5, 3-1) on Friday night. Next week, Sierra Lutheran will play at home three times — Coral Academy (2-6, 0-6) on Monday, Yerington (8-3, 6-0) on Wednesday, and another matchup with Incline on Friday.


SIERRA LUTHERAN GIRLS LOSE TO NORTH TAHOE

The Falcon girls basketball team fell against North Tahoe (6-6, 6-0) this past weekend, 30-13.

UP NEXT: Sierra Lutheran (0-7, 0-6 in Class 2A league play) traveled out to Incline (4-5, 1-4) on Friday, but will host three home games next week against Coral Academy (1-6, 1-5), Yerington (6-7, 5-1) and Incline.
