The Greenwave wrestling team is inching closer to the postseason with one tournament left on the schedule.
After placing fourth at the Steve Deaton Memorial in Minden on Saturday, Fallon travels both to South Tahoe on Saturday and Spring Creek for the two-day Kiwanis Invitational. The JV boys and girls will compete at the lake while the varsity boys are in Spring Creek.
The league duals and girls regional tournament follow before the boys regional in two weeks at Wooster. The state tournament is Feb. 7-8 in Fallon.
Lowry Blue won the Minden tournament with 183 points while Fallon recorded 113.5.
Four Greenwave wrestlers won their bracket.
Lonnie Adams (138) and Neal McIntrye (138B) each placed first with Adams winning his four bouts by fall, including a first-period pin over Lowry Blue’s Odyn Santos in the championship. McIntrye scored tech falls in all three wins, including a 19-3 decision over teammate Lars Rasmussen, who won his first two bouts.
Carson Melendy (157) won his bracket with three tech falls and one fall, including a 21-4 win over Pershing County’s Angelo Gibson in the championship. Wyatt Lambert (157B) won his division with three-straight pins, including a second-period win over North Valleys’ Hector Barajas Garcia.
Matthew Bird (165B) won his first two bouts by tech fall before pinning Hug’s Diego Escobar Rodriguez to win his bracket.
Andre Green (132) won his first three matches to advance to the championship. Green, though, finished second after falling to Yerington’s Nathaniel Gutierrez. Nathan Anderson and Rio Segura, who competed in the B division of the 132-pound bracket, finished second and third. Anderson won his first two by fall before falling in the final, while Segura pinned South Tahoe’s Jayden Hunter in the medal round.
Evan Mackuliak (120) finished third, winning four-straight bouts after losing his opener by tech fall (18-2). He scored a 23-8 tech fall win over Wooster’s Kenet Paguada in the medal round. Colton Blankenship (190) finished fourth when he fell into the consolation bracket after a 16-0 tech fall loss in the semifinals. He pinned his next opponent before falling in the medal round.
Braylon Byrd (106), Tayven Martinez (144B) and Jason Lewis (215) each finished 1-2, while Collin Werle (113) and Trey Bradley (120B) each finished 0-2.
For the girls, Tommie Fitzer (135) and Zoe Rasmussen (155) each finished fourth, and Melody Garcia-Bishop (100) took fifth. Mckayla Taylor (125) didn’t place.
