This week, the LVN looks back from May through August, and next week the LVN looks at the year’s final four months.


MAY

• Although Love occurred in late April, the LVN reported on the cleanup campaign during the first week of May. Volunteers gave back to their community by cleaning and beautifying areas such as parks, washing vehicles for first responders, cleaning the city mural and completing many others projects.

• Amazon announces plans to build a Last Mile Distribution center in Fallon’s business park located east of Harrigan Road. New River Parkway is located about a half-mile north of Wildes Road and offers “completely customizable shovel-ready lots.”

• Candidates Night is announced for late May.

• Tricia Strasdin resigns from the school board. Strasdin, a teacher in Fernley, is applying for educational openings in Churchill County.

• Funding for animal welfare group is approved.

• Night of the Fights attracts hundreds of spectators to the Rafter 3C arena.

• Armed Forces Day is held at the Rafter 3C Complex.

• The Lady Wave softball team wins the state 3A title at Fallon, the host school. The baseball team also qualified for state, but Virgin Valley won the title.

• Churchill County High School holds annual National Honor Society induction.

• Graduation exercises for area high schools begins later in the month.

• Nevada Assembly speaker delivers the keynote address at the Churchill County Democrats dinner.

• City approves funding for new sanitation trucks.

• Moving Forward powwow begins.


JUNE

• Primary election voting winds down, and winners are elected for county commission, Districts 1 and 3; Justice of the Peace, School Board and Fallon mayor.

• County Commissioners approve FY 2024-25 budget.

• Churchill County School District hires new Human Resource director.

•. Rotary Club helps CARE program.

• BLM urges residents and visitors to take precautions as fire season begins.

• Retired Army Lt. Col. Henry “Hank” Whole, a former teacher and youth leader in the Sea Cadets, dies.


JULY

• Fallon celebrates Fourth of July with parade, downtown activities, auto racing.

• Battle of the Badges blood drive kicks off.

• Commission recognizes employees for their longevity.

• Counties receive PILT (Payment in Lieu of Taxes) money from the federal government.

• New funding announced for Nevada housing projects.

• Greenwave Hall of Fame inductee announced.

• Western Nevada College reports future looks bright for tis programs.

• Mountain lion warnings issued for south of Fallon.

• Temperatures rise into the triple digits.

• Bureau of Land Management conducts horse gather northeast of Churchill County near Lovelock.

• Longtime Churchill County educators Keith and Brenda Boone retire.

• Naval Air Force Atlantic commander visits NAS Fallon.

• Former educator and CCSD School Board member Paul Hinz dies.

AUGUST

• More than 200 shooters competed in the Cowboy Fast Draw Association’s The Fastest Gun Alive – World Championship of Cowboy Fast Draw at the Rafter 3C Arena.

• Community Day and Back-to-School night assists students returning to a new school year, which begins in August.

• Churchill County Sheriff’s Office recognizes detective Michael Hardin.

• Ribbon cuttings are conducted for new FAWG (Fallon Animal Welfare Group and Oasis Academy High School.

• City Council appoints new city clerk/treasurer.

ª The All-Community Reunion attracts hundreds of former Greenwave students and their families to Oats Park.

• Fallon Cantaloupe Festival and Country Fair opens.

• Student wins ride in a police car for the first day of school.

• Sailors injured in helicopter training exercise.
