The Carson City Sheriff’s Office arrested a suspect for trespassing Tuesday night on the Mark Twain Elementary School playground.
No one was injured in the incident and after law enforcement officers investigated, no damage was found to the campus. According to the Carson City School District, officials began Wednesday morning as a “secure campus” in which students used the main entrance. All classes and recess were held indoors.
The CCSO completed its investigation and school resumed as normal at 9 a.m.
Sheriff Ken Furlong told the Appeal the low-level incident began Tuesday night as a welfare check on the individual living temporarily with a couple near Seeliger Elementary School after a period of “couch hopping,” Furlong said. After a dispute, the suspect was asked to leave the couple’s home and went to the Mark Twain playground. The individual may have been mentally unwell or under the influence of alcohol or drugs, Furlong said, but was arrested for trespassing and an alternative sentencing violation.
“It was a small, small event,” Furlong said. “The problem was we couldn’t make sure the playground was clean until daylight, and that’s where the district came in.”
The district’s school resource officers conducted a check with its K-9 officers to make sure students would be safe, Furlong said.
School officials remind parents, students and community members to “Report, Don’t Repost.” Concerns can be reported to the Carson City Sheriff’s Office non-emergency dispatch at 775-887-COPS (2677) or they can dial 911 and provide dispatch with details of any suspicious social media posts or other questionable information obtained from online platforms.
