At 6:56 p.m. Jan. 25, the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office was notified of a vehicle pursuit taking place in neighboring Mono County, California. The Mono County Sheriff’s Office, assisted by California Highway Patrol, were pursuing a vehicle being operated by a homicide suspect. The homicide suspect was wanted for a stabbing that occurred in Washoe County earlier that day.

Lyon County deputies were asked to assist as the pursuit was coming into Lyon County on Highway 338 in Smith Valley. When deputies arrived in the area, they observed the suspect vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed northbound on Highway 338. An LCSO deputy pursued the vehicle through the valley on Day Lane. Based on the fact the suspect was wanted for homicide, the deputy ended the pursuit by incapacitating the suspect vehicle using his patrol car. The driver was arrested without further incident and initially booked into the Lyon County Jail on charges of felony eluding and possession of a stolen vehicle.

The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office is assisting Washoe County Sheriff’s Office detectives with their investigation. The Washoe County District Attorney’s Office has issued an arrest warrant for open murder with the use of a deadly weapon for the suspect and he will be held until he is released to Washoe at a later date.

The suspect is identified as Nicholas Orion Powell, 24, of Incline Village. He has a no bail hold.
