Sophomore Tommie Fitzer punched her ticket to next month’s state wrestling tournament after finishing third last weekend in Reno.
Fitzer finished 4-1 in Saturday’s All-Girls Northern Region tournament at McQueen High School where the top-four wrestlers in each weight advanced to next month’s state tournament in Fallon.
Fitzer (130 pounds) won her first two matches by fall to advance to the semifinals when she lost by four points to drop into the consolation bracket. Needing one more win to advance to state, Fitzer pinned Reed’s Jacinda Munoz-Aguilar in the second period to finish no worse than fourth. She followed with her fourth pin of the day by taking down South Tahoe’s Kailani Higgins in the third period.
Three others wrestled for Fallon but fell short of qualifying. Melody Garcia-Bishop (100), Mckayla Taylor (125) and Zoe Rasmussen (140) each went 0-2.
