Senator softball opens league play with win

Douglas High School baseball jumped on Carson early Tuesday, putting up crooked numbers in the first and second innings on its way to a 13-2 win in six innings.

Sophomore Jared Peters went 2-for-4 with five RBIs for the Tigers. Aiden Tarlo and Titus Gocke added two RBIs each.

Pitcher Duncan DeLange struck out 10 Senators in five innings, picking up his second win.

“My goal for this season is to blow it by as many guys as possible,” said DeLange. “My best pitch is definitely my fastball. … I have a lot of confidence in that and (Jeffrey) Peters behind the plate.”

Peter Ziegler pitched the sixth and threw seven strikes on seven pitches and struck out two of the three hitters he faced.

Lucas LaFollette scored the first run for the Senators after a Tiger fielding error.

In the third, Ethan Cook doubled to drive in Chase Grundy after the catcher lined a one-out single into centerfield.

Max Mendoza threw 3.2 innings in relief for the Senators and struck out five.

UP NEXT: Douglas (3-1, 1-0 in Class 5A North league play) is at Galena (0-2, 0-1) today. Carson (1-3, 0-1) traveled to Reed (2-4, 0-1) Thursday.

CARSON SOFTBALL TOPPLES DAMONTE

Carson High softball opened its home schedule against Damonte Ranch on Tuesday, besting the Mustangs, 7-5.

Elizabeth Barker, Sofia Morrison and Kiele Franco all had multi-hit performances in the win.

Five of the Senators’ seven runs came in the second inning, beginning with a Barker RBI single.

Leadoff hitter Riley Kuhlman smacked a two-run triple to right, giving Carson a 3-1 lead. Carson’s next hitter, Jordan Brubaker, singled to left to score Kuhlman for the Senators’ fourth run.

After a Franco single moved Brubaker to second, Morrison knocked in the fifth run with a single to right.

Barker tallied another RBI single in the fifth while Rhys Branham plated the final run with an RBI single in the sixth.

Pitcher Maddie Blanchard-Salazar had four strikeouts in seven innings, holding the Mustangs to one run through the first five innings.

UP NEXT: Carson (3-3-1, 1-0 in league play) took on Bishop Manogue (3-0) Thursday. Today, the Senators host Reno (0-4, 0-1) for a doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m.


TIGER SOFTBALL GRABS SECOND WIN

Douglas High softball secured its second win of the season Tuesday in Minden with a 12-5 victory over McQueen.

The Tigers scored six in the first inning.

Hailee Lister hit a two-run homer in the first, Ava Gildea hit a three-run homer in the fifth and Cam McLelland pelted a two-run shot in the sixth.

Lister, Annie Hill, Haylie Pledger and Ida Martin recorded doubles.

In the circle, Pledger struck out eight in seven innings while allowing five earned runs.

UP NEXT: Douglas (2-0) traveled to Spanish Springs (2-1) on Thursday before hosting Bishop Manogue (3-0) in a doubleheader today in Minden. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m.

GALENA SWIM TEAM TOPS DOUGLAS

The Douglas High boys and girls swim and dive teams both lost to Galena last weekend.

The Tiger girls went back and forth with the Grizzlies before falling, 136-127.

Caitlin Taylor took first place in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:13.36. Taylor touched the wall in second place in the 200-yard freestyle, posting a time of 2:11.01.

Kiley Wagstaff won the 1-meter dive with a score of 159.75.

Tierra Mackay was second in the 50 free in 26.95 while Carli Stevenson was second in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:38.47. Mackay was also second in the 500 freestyle in 5:58.21.

Lisa Rossi Lunelli was second in the 100-yard freestyle in 1:09.18.

On the boys side, Galena won 154-51.

Lucas Goss won the 100-yard freestyle in 55.26 for the Tigers while the foursome of Goss, Wyatt Tomazin, Jackson Yturbide and Scott Peck won the 200 relay in 1:54.81.

Peck took second in the boys 200 IM while Yturbide was third in the 200 freestyle.


FIVE-RUN FIFTH CARRIES DAYTON SOFTBALL

Dayton High softball trailed South Tahoe, 6-5, after four innings Wednesday, but rallied in the fifth to post a 10-6 win to stay undefeated.

The Dust Devils scored five runs in the fifth, beginning with a Kiley Paterson RBI single, which plated Madison Cleland. Paterson ended the afternoon 3-for-4 with one RBI.

Bradlie Stevens knocked in Paterson on an RBI groundout to give Dayton a 7-6 lead before sophomore Macie Hannum doubled to right, scoring another run.

Dayton put together extra-base hits in their next two plate appearances as Esmeralda Hernandez deposited an RBI triple into center field and LaSade Conti popped an RBI double to right.

In the circle, Donnita Wass struck out six over seven innings while surrendering three earned runs.

UP NEXT: Dayton (7-0) will travel to Truckee (0-3) today for a doubleheader, starting at 10 a.m. The Dust Devils will be at Carson (3-3-1) Tuesday for a 3 p.m. contest.


DUST DEVIL BASEBALL THUMPS SMITH VALLEY

Dayton High baseball wasted little time Tuesday, scoring five runs in the first inning en route to a 9-1 win over Smith Valley.

Ivor Evans hit his third home run in as many games to lead off the fifth inning for Dayton.

Duke Evans went 2-for-3 with three RBIs while River Aten, Ryan Frank and Adrian Acosta all were credited with an RBI.

On the mound, Viliami Tulimafua-Curran picked up the win with a two-inning start and four strikeouts.

Brody Dupuy, Jordan Kennedy and Kadyn Clifford combined for five innings of relief as the Dust Devils surrendered two hits total.

Kennedy fanned five hitters, Dupuy punched out four and Clifford added two more strikeouts to bring Dayton’s total to 15.

UP NEXT: Dayton’s (6-1) only contest in the next week is a Saturday doubleheader at Wooster (2-1), starting at 10 a.m.


OASIS OUTLASTS SIERRA LUTHERAN

Oasis Academy bested Sierra Lutheran baseball Tuesday by a final of 13-1 in five innings.

Drew Gleiser and Grayson Ricks were the only two Falcons to record a hit in the loss with Gleiser coming around to score on a Matt Fahey sacrifice fly in the first inning.

UP NEXT: Sierra Lutheran (2-5-1, 0-4 in Class 2A North league play) will play two against Oasis Academy (4-0, 4-0) today, starting at 10 a.m.
