I was surprised to see such a short letter from Mike Rodgick in last Saturday’s Appeal. Usually he can’t resist a paean of praise for his idol, Donald Trump. This time he limits himself to castigating Democrats for complaining. His oversight can only be inadvertent. I feel it sportsmanlike to help him out.
To start with there’s the price of eggs. Like magic, Trump has driven it to approach $10 a dozen. The current outbreak of avian flu does not alone justify the increase. Imagine all the extra profit that must be flowing into the pockets of Trump’s MAGA clan.
There’s Trump’s game of on-again, off-again tariffs. How quickly it has forced the leaders of the big three auto makers, GM, Ford and Stellantis to bend the knee and kiss the ring, and without a doubt, grease a slew of other palms. And how tariffs establish a de-facto federal sales tax to help fund Trump’s gift of income tax reduction for his wealthy buddies.
Finally for this letter at any rate there’s Trump’s negotiating abilities, and how quickly by withdrawing aid he has brought Ukraine to the negotiating table without the country’s knowledge of what it will have to give up for what promises to be only temporary relief. What quid-pro-quo is there with Putin for that, I wonder? Assistance with acquiring Greenland, or perhaps even Canada?
What a miracle worker that Trump must be! All this and more in less than 50 days.
