The Bighorns baseball team won its third series of the season despite dropping its first game of the season against Battle Mountain last weekend in Fallon.
Oasis Academy defeated the Lander County school, 3-0, on Friday before taking the series with an 11-1 win in Saturday’s first game at the county park. The Longhorns nipped the Bighorns, 5-4, in the nightcap.
Oasis Academy, which sits in first in the 2A North with an 8-1 record, hosts Silver Stage on Friday before traveling to Silver Springs for Saturday’s doubleheader. Oasis Academy hosts Yerington on Tuesday.
Fenn Mackedon and Ryder McNabb combined to shut out Battle Mountain in Friday’s low-scoring affair.
McNabb picked up the win after giving up only one hit and one walk while striking out 10 in five innings. Mackedon struck out four and gave up four hits in the final two innings.
Kayden White and McNabb each singled and doubled, while Josh Gusewelle had two singles and a stolen base. Zachary Budner and Trevor Barrenchea each singled.
Budner’s single to left broke the tie in the first inning before McNabb doubled in Gusewelle in the third. White’s double scored Thibodaux in the fourth.
Matthew Bird pitched all five innings of Saturday’s win, striking out sight and giving up three hits and an earned run.
McNabb led the team with three doubles and three RBIs, while Gusewelle had two hits. Barrenchea and Jose Montalvo each drove in two, and Bird and James Thibodaux each had an RBI.
McNabb doubled in Gusewelle in the first inning before the Bighorns scored four runs in the third. McNabb doubled again to score Guswelle and then scored on Bird’s bases-loaded walk. Barrenchea doubled to left to drive in Mackedon and Budner.
The Bighorns scored six in the fourth inning to enact the mercy rule.
McNabb doubled in Gusewelle for the third time, and then he scored on another bases-loaded walk. Montalvo’s single scored Barrenchea and Budner to give Oasis Academy a 9-1 lead. White’s single to left scored Thibodaux, and Montalvo stole home for the team’s 11th run of the game.
Battle Mountain broke a 3-3 tie with two runs in the final inning but Oasis Academy mounted a comeback that fell short by one run.
White pitched 4.2 innings, striking out five and allowing three unearned runs and four hits. Bird pitched one inning before Mackedon finished the last two, striking out five despite giving up two earned runs in the seventh.
Budner led the team with two hits, while Barrenchea, Gusewelle and Mackedon each doubled. White and Thibodaux each singled.
With the game deadlocked in the final inning, Mackedon struck out two of the first three batters but the Longhorns threatened with a runner at third. Facing an 0-2 count, D Lara singled to score L Bundrock and break the tie before stealing second. J Perrone doubled in Lara for the second run.
Gusewelle was hit by Lara’s pitch to open the bottom half of the inning, and he stole second on the next pitch before McNabb struck out swinging. Mackedon doubled on the first pitch to score Gusewelle from second. An infield popup and flyball to center ended the game.
