Christine Crago Weitzel passed away peacefully on Monday, January 18, 2021 at home surrounded by her loving family. Chris fought an eight-year battle against leiomyosarcoma cancer. She was born in Carson City, NV on September 3, 1961 to Arlene and Duane Crago.
After graduating from Procter Hug High School, she attended the University of Nevada for two semesters after which she went to work for First Interstate Bank for over 9 years. It was while working a summer position at the Nevada Department of Transportation that she met her future husband Dean Weitzel.
Chris and Dean married on May 2, 1987 at the Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Carson City. Along their journey they brought two boys, Nick and Michael, into the world. While they attended elementary and middle school, Chris was a volunteer at the schools’ libraries, assisting in their classrooms, and attending field trips.
Chris was involved in many activities. She would routinely meet with an organized walking group multiple times a week for walks throughout Carson City. The other members of the walking group became family to Chris. Chris also became a dedicated quilter. She was a member of the Carson Valley Quilt Guild for several years. Chris made quilts for many family members and friends which will become a reminder of her generosity. Of all her activities, her most loved activity was spending time with her family. Her love for her family was unyielding. They spent many hours cooking, playing games, making arts and crafts, and traveling. Chris’s favorite trips included traveling to Hawaii and Monterey Bay with Nick, Michael, and Dean. Chris was also active with AYSO (youth soccer) during the years Nick and Michael played. Chris would not only keep the parents informed of game schedules, make banners, and make snacks, she would make sure all the players were at practices and games even if she had to pick them up and get them home.
Chris was preceded in death by her father Duane Crago, Stepfather Richard Moose, Uncle Raymond Joslin, brother Kevin Duane Crago, Father-in-law Norman Weitzel (Shirley) and Step Father-in-Law Robert Pehl. She is survived by her husband Dean Weitzel, sons Nick Weitzel and Michael Weitzel, Mother Arlene Moose, brothers Stan Crago, Sheldon Crago (Carrie) and Steve Crago. Mother-in-law Jackie Pehl (Ed), Sisters-in-law Valerie Denos (Alonzo), Diane Takach (Ed), and Wendy Hill (Steve), Brothers-in-law Greg Weitzel (Ginny), Eric Weitzel (Leslie), and Keith Weitzel (Joyce), and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank the medical providers who assisted Chris with her heroic fight over the last eight years. This includes Kindred Hospice, Renown Health Home Care, Dr. Lim and the staff at the Center of Hope, Dr. Chawla and staff at the Cancer Center of Southern California, Renown Infusion Center, Dr. Rowan at Renown, Dr. Elliott at Carson Medical Group, Dr. Edward Rose (Retired) along with all the medical staff at each facility.
Chris’s wishes were to be cremated and her ashes later placed besides her husband Dean Weitzel so they can be together again. To celebrate her life Chris would want everyone to raise a glass of wine on a clear evening with a bright moon. Due to COVID-19 and travel restrictions a celebration of life will be at a later date. A Memorial Visitation will be held on Thursday, February 4 from 1:00 – 3:00 PM at Walton’s Chapel of the Valley, 1281 N. Roop Street, Carson City, NV.
