Louis F. Granier

Louis Frank Granier died peacefully in his sleep on May 18, 2021. Louie was born on September 20, 1941, in Havre, Montana. He was the second of five children born to Mary and Frank Granier. Louie grew up in Montana eventually attending Northern Montana College where he met the love of his life – Trish. They married shortly after Louie graduated from college and had two children, Maria and Frank.
Louie became a teacher – teaching was not a job to Louie, but rather a calling. He began teaching in Montana, but he, Trish and the kids soon migrated to Nevada. He started his career teaching middle school English but hit his stride when he moved to the high school and began teaching U.S. Government. Louie engaged his students in unique ways – taking his students to the legislature to see law makers in action, taking them to the local prison to understand liberty and freedom and consequences of actions, assigning them the task of watching and reading the current news in preparation for lively debates and classroom discussions – basically employing any strategy to make the material come alive and give it meaning. He didn’t teach his students what to think...he taught them how to think. He relished the role of playing devil’s advocate as he addressed the topics of the day. He retained that quality until the very end – as you can imagine, the past few years have been fertile ground for Louie’s teaching and topics of discussion. But perhaps Louie’s greatest quality was his ability to make every student feel important and heard and worthy. He touched his students’ hearts and lives in profound, life-affirming ways.
Besides teaching, Louie’s life revolved around family and friends – camping trips, card games, sports, movies, football bets at the casinos – simply put, he valued spending time together. He loved being a husband, a father, a grandfather, a brother, an uncle, a brother-in-law, a father-in-law, a teacher, and a friend. He was generous with his time and his money, and he had a heart for those who struggled in life. He was the trusted confidante of untold numbers, and his earthly presence will be missed.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, June 4th at 3:00 p.m. at Hidden Valley Country Club located at 3575 E. Hidden Valley Drive in Reno. ALL are invited – please join us in celebrating and honoring Louie’s life.
