Jane Ellen Johnson, a resident of Jack’s Valley, passed peacefully at home on March 24, 2024, surrounded by her closest family. She is survived by her only child, Kristin Kimmerling and family (husband Robert and children Paula and Hobb), and Jane’s sister, nephew and niece, Kathy, Lee and Mercedes Shinohara.
Jane attended public schools in Eugene, Oregon before entering Stanford University and graduating in 1958 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. Following graduation, she pursued her career ambition of elementary school instruction. After moving to Nevada in 1967, she obtained her master’s degree in education from the University of Nevada, Reno. She taught for 36 years, finishing her career at the Carson City School District until she retired in 2002.
Jane was a philanthropic supporter of education. She was a Lifetime member of AAUW (American Association of University Women). She was involved in the AAUW book club, Great Discussions, Gourmet Food Group and served as the President and Treasurer for the local AAUW Chapter, and as Treasurer for the State Board.
In addition to her dedication to education, Jane remained devoted to her love of music throughout her lifetime. She sang with the Carson City Singers for many years, she played cello for the Carson City Symphony since 2001 and was a founding member of Consort Canzona. Her final performance with the Symphony was the Christmas concert in December of 2023.
Early in retirement, Jane developed a passion for travel. Not just ordinary travel, but adventure; with destinations including the Galapagos, Chile, Peru, Tibet, Nepal, the European Alps, France, Croatia, Serbia, Bosnia, China, southeast Asia, New Zealand, Australia, southern Africa, Iceland and Morocco. She ultimately reached 26 of her dream destinations and six of the seven continents.
Jane also loved the outdoors, riding her bike, hiking and snow shoeing in Carson Valley and the Tahoe area.
There will be a Celebration of Life at the Mormon Station State Park in Genoa, Nevada on Saturday July 13, 2024, at 11am. Refreshments to follow in the park.
