Mary was born in 1933 in Culpeper Virginia on Redwood Farm where she had a cherished childhood with her loving family, her Mama and Daddy, three brothers and three sisters. Her entire life she talked about growing up in rural Virginia and her wonderful family memories.
Mary and the love of her life husband Larry Huntt moved out west in 1958 settling in Nevada. They raised their two children Calvin and Caryn in Gardnerville in the beautiful Carson Valley. Mary worked at Murdock’s clothing store in Carson City for decades and was famed for her amazing “big city” beautifully decorated large store windows. Mary was also successful as an Avon Lady making a genuine connection of friendship with all that she met.
Mary was so proud of her husband Larry, a Douglas County school teacher and after retirement from teaching, a minister. Together they lived their lives with strong faith in Christ and God’s love. Mary and Larry remained deeply in love throughout every day of their marriage. Larry’s passing in 2003 was a profound loss for Mary for the rest of her life. While her heart always remained with her beloved Virginia, Mary treasured all her family in both
Virginia and Nevada, including being blessed with her sister Alice as her lifelong best friend.
Mary enjoyed a lifetime of visits to and from Virginia family, family reunions, and the notable Dodson domino games. Mary was a loving mother and grandmother whose home was the heart of the family with so many beautiful family memories created from her loving care.
Mary is survived by son Calvin Huntt, grandsons Caleb Huntt and Chuck Allred and their mother Mila Huntt, daughter Caryn (Ed) DeCarlo, grandson Paul (Rachel) and great granddaughter Sofia DeCarlo, granddaughter Emily (Dac) and great grandson Wes Collins, sister Alice Reed and sister (in-law) Ruth Dodson, and second daughter Jeanne Abbott Gayler. Mary is also survived by her many treasured nieces and nephews and their children.
Mary was preceded in death by beloved husband Larry Huntt, parents Richard and Rhoda Dodson, sisters Elizabeth Marshall, Gertrude Fant and sister-in-law Lucy Dodson, brothers Lewis, John and James Robert Dodson, brothers-in-law Ben Reed and Bob Marshall, infant son James, and two nephews.
Mary’s family and friends will remember her forever as a kind and loving soul who always put others first and gave of herself endlessly with all her heart to those she loved. She will continue to be a special gift to all of us.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday November 22, 2024, at First Christian Church in Carson City followed by a burial at Lone Mountain Cemetery.
