Douglas swim falls to Carson

The Tiger boys and girls swim teams couldn’t pull off the team wins over rival Carson this weekend.

On the girls’ side, the Senators had the upper hand by a final of 168-108 while the Tiger boys fell 119-104.

Leading the way for the Tiger girls were Gracie Goss and Kalia Blumenthal in the 100-yard backstroke and 500-meter freestyle, respectively.

Goss put together a first-place finish in 1:09 while Blumenthal matched her teammate’s top spot in a time of 7:47.99.

Emily Phillips won the 1-meter dive competition with a score of 152.40.

The Tigers’ 400-yard relay team of Caitlin Taylor, Carli Stevenson, Kiera Duffy and Goss also took a first-place finish in 4:10.04.

On the boys’ side, Baylen Rowlett won the 200-yard freestyle in 2:04.13 for the Tigers.

Matthew Yturbide and Matthew Sutton each added first-place finishes in the 50-yard freestyle and the 100-yard freestyle in 25.58 and 51.39, respectively.

Kolten Brown finished in first place in diving with a score of 224.90.

Douglas’ medley relay team of Yturbide, Sutton, Rowlett and Timothy Gleason won their event in 1:53.02.


DOUGLAS SOFTBALL STEAMROLLS RENO

After beating Reno, 21-0, in three innings Tuesday, Douglas High School softball turned around and put up nearly the same result against the Huskies on Thursday.

The Tigers took their second meeting of the week with Reno by a final of 16-1.

Maddie Gooch homered again, marking her third long ball in two games against the Huskies while driving in four RBIs.

Zora Simpson struck out three in the circle and helped herself out by hitting a home run, tying Gooch for a team-high four RBIs in the win.

Mya Roberts and Peyton Simpson had three RBIs each as both smacked doubles against the Huskies.

Talia Tretton and Annie Hill each drove in a run in the win, also.

UP NEXT: Douglas (20-4, 10-0 in Class 5A North league play) will host Galena (5-18-1, 3-7) in a doubleheader Saturday in Minden, starting at 11 a.m.


TIGER TRACK ATHLETES COMPETE IN SACRAMENTO

A handful of Douglas High School track and field athletes were selected for the Sacramento Meet of Champions this past weekend.

Douglas senior Bliss Moody won the varsity long jump with a season record of 16 feet, 10.75 inches while Elizabeth Gneiting took 17th in the same event.

Gneiting’s best result came in the triple jump where she PR’d with a mark of 36–1.

Tiger sophomore Grace Strabala put together a 12.87 seconds in the 100-meter varsity finals to finish in 17th.

Strabala took 15th in the 200-meter dash in a personal record time of 26.23.

The Tiger girls 4x100 team — Gneiting, Moody, Logan Karwoski and Strabala — were 18th in 50.70.

Karwoski went on to take third in the varsity high jump with a clearance of 5-0.
