Douglas fifth seed for regional baseball

Douglas High School baseball beat Reed, 9-4, on Tuesday and Spanish Springs, 8-6, on Wednesday to earn the No. 5 seed in the Class 5A North regional tournament.

The Tigers will open the tournament at No. 4 Reed on Tuesday at 4 p.m.

This past Tuesday was Senior Night for the Tigers, who put together a 9-4 win over the Raiders behind some timely hitting.

Thomas Young delivered a two-run single in the third inning to tie the game at 3-3 while Jeffrey Peters expanded Douglas’ lead to 9-4 in the fifth with a two-run single.

Blake Faiss went 2-for-2 with a pair of doubles while Owen Evans and Keegan Freeman each had two RBIs.

Wednesday afternoon, Douglas’ offense stayed hot.

Trailing 6-4 into the sixth inning, Grayson Kamper drove in Aaron Moss to bring the Tigers’ within one before Evans added a second run on a sacrifice fly.

In the seventh, Moss knocked in Jackson Ovard on an RBI groundout before Kamper plated his second RBI of the game on a single to shallow right field.

Douglas ends its regular season with a 16-8 overall record, 9-7 in Class 5A North league play.

“We’ve been streaky, but I’d rather be streaky in the last week of the season and into the postseason and take our chances,” said Douglas coach Jim Tucker. “A breath of fresh air; we are the team we believe we are.”

TIGER SOFTBALL SHUTS OUT MCQUEEN

Annie Hill delivered the biggest blow to the Lancers on Tuesday in a 4-0 Douglas win.

In the third inning on the sixth pitch of the at-bat, Hill roped a two-run home run to center field to give the Tigers a 3-0 lead.

In the fifth, Marissa McLelland added an insurance run with an RBI single to left field to score Maddie Gooch.

Talia Tretton continued her dominance in the circle, striking out 16 Lancers.

After pitching seven scoreless innings, Tretton’s season ERA is down to 1.22 in 149.2 innings of work.

UP NEXT: Douglas (23-4, 13-0 in Class 5A North league play) will close out the regular season at home Saturday with a doubleheader against Carson (7-18, 2-11).

CARSON BASEBALL FALLS TO GALENA, MANOGUE

The Senators continue to battle late into games, but couldn’t come out on the winning end in an 8-7 loss to Galena on Tuesday.

After falling behind 3-1, Carson scored four runs in the sixth inning thanks to an Ethan Cook two-run double and a Tanner Bohemier two-run homer.

Cook ended Tuesday’s game with four RBIs while going 2-for-4 at the plate.

In a 2-0 loss to Bishop Manogue on Wednesday, the Senators’ bullpen did a number as six pitchers combined to give up two earned runs.

Cook struck out two in a scoreless inning of relief while Demarcus Brewster, Jeremy Hernandez and Carson White all threw scoreless innings.

Cook was the only Senator with a hit.

UP NEXT: Carson (8-22, 1-15 in Class 5A North league play) jumped into postseason play Friday against Damonte Ranch (5-21-1, 2-14) in the regional 8/9 play-in game. 

MINERS TOO MUCH FOR CARSON SOFTBALL 

Bishop Manogue softball beat Carson, 16-2, on Tuesday in six innings.

Carson put together nine hits, including a solo home run from Elizabeth Barker in the bottom of the fifth.

Cali Stagliano had the only other RBI for Carson on a single in the sixth inning.

Bella Reyes doubled and ended the contest 2-for-2 at the plate while Riley Kuhlman also had a pair of hits.

UP NEXT: Carson (7-18, 2-11) will need to win one of its final three league games to qualify for the regional tournament, starting Thursday against Damonte Ranch (6-13-1, 3-10). Saturday, the Senators will face Douglas in Minden.

CHS BOYS SWIM BESTS MANOGUE, GIRLS FALL

The Carson High boys swim team won all but three races last Saturday against Bishop Manogue, taking down the Miners by a 137-48 final.

Todd Gosselin won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:14.29 while Ewan Calley was the quickest in the 100-yard breast stroke in 1:10.56

On the girls side, the Miners were able to beat the Senators, 154-126.

Katarina Klatt had the quickest time in the 100-yard freestyle in 53.67 and the 50-yard freestyle in 25.24.

Larkin Russell paced the field in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:20.89 while Alexandra Llamas-Cruz was the quickest swimmer in the 200-yard freestyle in 2:04.74.

DOUGLAS GIRLS SWIM BEATS REED, BOYS FALL

The Tiger girls swim team put up some quick times this past weekend to get the upper hand over Reed by a final of 143-102.

Carli Stevenson won the 500-yard freestyle for the Tigers in 5:53.97 while Gracie Goss had the fastest time in the 100-yard freestyle in 1:01.19.

Emily Phillips won the 1-meter dive portion of the meet with a score of 165.50.

Cammie Jahreis’ time of 28.53 was quick enough to win the 50-yard freestyle for Douglas while Kiera Duffy’s 2:29.92 won the 200-yard individual medley.

The Reed boys bested Douglas, 155-78, last Saturday.

Kolten Brown won the 1-meter dive with a score of 196.5 while Baylen Rowlett was second in the 500-yard freestyle in 5:32.36. Rowlett was also second in the 200-yard freestyle in 2:06.23.
