Senator track and field sends a handful to state

Carson High’s Anne Davis did everything she could to try and grab the Class 5A North 100-meter hurdles regional title.

As Douglas’ Katelyn Coons closed in, Davis hurled herself across the line in an effort to beat Coons to the finish.

Ultimately, Davis finished in second place in 16.38, all of 0.12 seconds behind Coons, but punched her ticket to the state meet at Carson High next weekend (May 17-18).

“It was a little disappointing to not get first, but I think I had a decent race. I dove at the finish line to try and catch the last girl, so that was kind of cool,” said Davis, who is a junior.

Davis has been at the top of the 100-meter hurdles leaderboard all season and said it’s been a priority of hers to win a regional championship.

“I trained really hard. I was doing hurdles every day,” said Davis. “God has really helped me a lot through a lot of my struggles. I fell last year at regionals and that was kind of heartbreaking. He gave me strength to keep going.”

There was no fear of ending up on the rubber this year after Davis gave literally every ounce of effort to try and secure the regional title.

“It’s been gratifying to have a come back season even if it didn’t end exactly the way I wanted, but I still have another year,” Davis said.

The Senator girls will send another representative to state in the 300-meter hurdles in Kaylynn Bloomfield.

Bloomfield also took second place, finishing in 47.09, a personal record.

The Senator girls 4x800 meter relay team – Brianna Rodriguez-Nunez, Vea Miner, Nastasia Sulprizio and Hannah Budd – won the regional title, posting a 9:52.39, finishing ahead of Bishop Manogue (9:55.38).

In the shot put, freshman Julie Salanoa was third with a throw of 32-2.5, picking up six team points for the Senator girls and punching a ticket to state.

The boys 4x800 team also qualified for state as the grouping of Alex Miner, Jaren Thornburg, Quinn Kuchnicki and Sean Thornton finished in 8:26.98.

Junior Aaron Witt just missed out on a state spot in the triple jump, finishing sixth with a mark of 39 feet, seven inches.

FALCONS PUNCH TICKETS APLENTY TO STATE

Sierra Lutheran senior David Luhr Immen is state bound in several events after this weekend Class 2A North regional track and field meet.

Immen was second in the 100-meter dash (11.48), won the regional title in the high jump (5-10) and was the opening leg on the second place finishing 4x100 relay team. He just missed out on qualifying in the 200-meter dash after taking fifth.

The Falcons’ 4x100 relay team – Michael Miles, Nathan Tack, Scott Schroeder and Luhr Immen – blew their own expectations out of the water Friday evening.

Sierra Lutheran blew away their best time of the season, recording a 45.53.

Handoffs were the crucial difference in Friday evening’s event.

“We’ve been working on them nonstop for the past two weeks. It was great tonight because we actually got them down,” said Luhr Immen. “Hardest thing for us to conquer this year.”

“Everything fell into place tonight,” said junior Nathan Tack.

Tack went on to take fourth in 400-meter dash in 52.99, which puts him into next week’s state meet.

Miles took second in the shot put (42-9.5) and discus (115-1) for the Falcons, securing a state spot in both field events.

On the girls side, the Falcons had two runners qualify for state in the 400.

Junior Kayla Carpenter crossed the line in second place (1:03.19) while freshman Sofia Gilson (1:03.73) was third, qualifying for state.

Sierra Lutheran’s girls 4x100 meter relay team will also make another appearance at Carson High next weekend, taking fourth place in 55.05.

Sophomore Sydney Sufka won the Class 2A North pole vault with a clearance of 7 feet, six inches to qualify for the state meet.

As a team, the Falcon girls took fifth with 47 team points. The boys were seventh with 68 team points.

DAYTON’S EVANS, TINSLEY MAKES STATE

Dayton High junior Rhys Evans cleared 13-3 in the Class 3A North pole vault competition over the weekend.

The height was good enough for second place and will earn him a spot at the state meet.

Freshman Madison Tinsley put together a mark of 4-10 in the high jump to take fourth place and earn a ticket to the state competition.

Dayton’s girls team took ninth as a unit with 14 team points. The Dust Devil boys were 11^th with 15 team points.
