Americanism essay entries due by Dec. 1

The National Fleet Reserve Association is again sponsoring an annual essay contest. This year's theme is "The Bill of Rights and Me."

The grand national prize is a $15,000 U.S. Savings Bond, with $5,000, $3,000 and $2,000 savings bonds awarded to the first, second and third place winners.

The contest is open to all students grades 7 through 12, including those who are home schooled.

Each entrant must be sponsored by an FRA member in good standing or by a currently chartered branch or unit.

The Sierra-Tahoe Branch 137 is prepared to sponsor all local applicants. Essays must be received by the Branch Americanism Chairman at P.O. Box 1342, Minden, NV, 89423 by Dec. 1. For information on rules, and for the cover sheet, visit www.fra.org. Call 266-3329 or 267-9592.

Local student completes wilderness EMT course

Carson Thomas, of Carson City, recently completed a 28-day Wilderness EMT course with the Wilderness Medicine Institute of NOLS. He received his wilderness certification from the institute and tested for his EMT-Basic certification with the National Registry of EMTs.

This course combined wilderness medicine education with urban medical care practices.
