Democrats to host historic Jefferson-Jackson Day dinner

All of the Democratic presidential candidates have agreed to participate in the Clark County Jefferson Jackson Day Dinner on Nov. 15, said Democratic Chairman John Hunt on Thursday. The dinner will directly follow the Democratic Presidential Debate in Las Vegas.

The dinner will feature U.S. Sens. Joe Biden, Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama and Chris Dodd; former Sens. John Edwards and Mike Gravel; Congressman Dennis Kucinich; and New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson.

Composing 73 percent of the total Democratic vote in Nevada, Clark County is a must-win county. Because the Nevada contest is a caucus and not a primary, additional emphasis is placed on organizing. With roughly 80 percent of the Clark County Jefferson Jackson Dinner made up of potential precinct captains, there will be pressure on the candidates to win over this crowd of opinion leaders and community activists.

Aircraft lands safely - in spite of landing gear trouble

An experimental airplane, which reported trouble with landing gear, touched down safely Friday afternoon at Minden-Tahoe Airport at 1:20 p.m.

East Fork firefighters responded to the airport after a distress call came in that the plane was having difficulty with the landing gear.

Storey County

Hearing set for fired teacher's appeal with school board

The Storey County School District Board of Trustees will hear an appeal from a fired Virginia City High School teacher at 1 p.m. Nov. 13.

School Board President Pam Smith said the tentative location for the hearing will be the Virginia City Middle School library.

William Beeson, who taught English and theater arts for more than 20 years at the high school, was placed on administrative leave in May after being accused of improper conduct with a student.

He was fired in August. No criminal charges were filed against him, however.

In September, the board was presented with a petition signed by 113 of 151 students at the high school supporting Beeson's return.

Beeson could seek arbitration if the termination is upheld.

Lyon County

Group seeks input, to share information, about public transit

Advocates of public transportation in Lyon County will be conducting another community interest survey today.

Linda Adams and "the Ironing Board Transit Brigade" will be accepting public input 10-11 a.m. today at the SlotWorld Daytona Casino in Smith's Shopping Center off Highway 50 in Dayton.

She said the purpose of the group is to bring awareness of the need for public transit and to provide information to residents as to how this service is funded.
