Football: Douglas tops Spring Creek, Basic beats Carson

Since 2004, Douglas High School football hasn’t started a season with a 3-0 record.

That streak ends in 2023 as the Tigers bested Spring Creek, 31-0, Friday night to move to 3-0 for the first time in over two decades.

The Tigers were able to move the ball relatively consistently throughout the contest, gathering a 15-0 lead early in the second quarter.

A safety to start the third quarter, followed by an Aaron Tekansik interception, set up Douglas with the ball in enemy territory and a 17-0 lead.

Tekansik ended the night with a pair of interceptions. 

"He looks like a guard, playing linebacker," joked Douglas High School head coach Kyle Mays of Tekansik. 

Douglas wouldn’t score on that drive, but successfully found the end zone two more times in the final quarter and a half.

Evan Youmans punched in the last touchdown inside of the final minute.

Even with the travel, Douglas' coaching staff was impressed with the team's ability to get off the bus with energy.

"Anytime we faced a little adversity, the kids responded accordingly," said Mays. 

Douglas' offense has continued to impress as well.

"We've continued to move the ball pretty methodically," said Mays. "I think the impressive part is chewing up yards and chewing up time."

On the other side of the ball, the Tigers have allowed nine points in three games. 

"They don't quit. It's a fun group to watch," said Mays. "We're going to have a big test (next Friday) against Damonte."

Senators can’t match Basic on the road

Carson High School football couldn’t keep pace with Basic High School in Henderson Friday night, falling by a final score of 40-13.

"We were very mistake filled tonight," said Carson head coach Ryan Boshard. "We have to get our first quarter fixed. It was stupid mental mistakes, false starts."

The Senators trailed 20-0 inside of the final minute of the first quarter before Jake Weninger once again got the scoring started.

For the third game in a row, Weninger returned a kickoff for a touchdown, cutting the Senator deficit to 20-7.

"Right now he's the biggest spark we've got. It might be a record in the Carson record book," said Boshard.

Carson didn’t get on the board again until early in the fourth quarter after a long, meticulous drive.

Powering the run game through Angelo Macias and Christian Rey, Carson was able to give Macias one final carry for a 6-yard score.
