Obituary: Edward A. Quinn

A funeral Mass will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Teresa of Avila Catholic Church for Edward A. Quinn, 81, a Carson City resident for 25 years.

A vigil service will be 7 p.m. Monday at the church. Mr. Quinn died Aug. 16 in Reno.

Born to Edward John and Marian Thomas Quinn in Butte, Mont., on May 29, 1920, his father was killed in a 1926 mining accident. Both he and his sister were raised by their mother, who did housekeeping and laundry during the Depression.

As a child, Mr. Quinn had rheumatic fever and during the time he was homebound, he read all of Shakespeare's plays and developed a life-long love for classical music.

Mr. Quinn attended St. Patrick's Grade School and Butte High School, finishing high school and tax accounting education at the Butte Business College. He and former opera singer and teacher Mary Lou Connors were married Sept. 14, 1948, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Butte.

Mr. Quinn began work at the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. as an elevator boy, and was promoted into the land and tax department. He was a lobbyist for the company and eventually named head of Anaconda's western division, land and tax department. He moved to company headquarters in Tucson, Ariz., with the family in 1972 and retired in 1975, when he moved to Carson City. He was a mining assessor for the state Department of Taxation, retiring in 1980.

Mr. Quinn was an active member of the Butte YMCA, the Community Concerts Association, Junior Achievement, Montana Taxpayer's Association, Immaculate Conception Parish and the Legion of Mary. During his years in Carson City, Mr. Quinn was an active member of St. Teresa of Avila Parish.

Among his survivors are his wife, Mary Lou; sons Lou of Carson City, Tom and daughter-in-law Julie of Helena, Mont.; daughters Patt Quinn-Davis and son-in-law John Davis, and Connie and son-in-law Tom Fronapfel, both of Carson City; sister Mary Jo Quinn of Helena, Mont., and Julie and son-in-law Peter Kiernan of Roseville, Minn.; sister Helen Shea of Butte; seven grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the St. Teresa of Avila Catholic Church Building Fund, Carson City or the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth Retirement Fund, care of the Mother House, 4200 S. 4th St., Leavenworth, Kan. 66048.
