Lauren Costella of the Carson Tigersharks finished a banner week on Sunday by finishing second in the U.S. Open Water Swim Championships 5K race near Fresno, Calif.

On Saturday, Costella, 16, won her first national title by winning the 1,500-meter freestyle at the USA Summer Swimming National Championships at Clovis West High (Calif.).

Costella finished second in one hour, two minutes, 30.53 seconds at Millerton Lake, located northeast of Fresno. She finished less than a minute behind Rachael Burke, who won in 1 hour, one minute, 54.30 seconds.

"I think it was a good race with Lauren," Burke said. "I probably would have been all over the place if not for her."

Costella won the 1,500 by lowering her previous best time of 16:38.07 by nearly 12 seconds, finishing in 16:26.13. Costella also finished fourth in the 800 free, lowering her previous best time of 8:53.01 by nearly 11 seconds, finishing in 8:42.24.
