Barber swims to junior national title

Justin Barber emerged as a winner in the 1,500-meter freestyle and placed fifth in the 800 freestyle to lead the Carson Tigersharks swim team at the U.S. Junior National Championships which came to an end over the weekend in San Antonio, Texas.


Barber, 15, won the 1,500 free in a personal record time of 16 minutes, 1.82 seconds on Saturday.


Two other Tigersharks competed in the 1,500, as Ryan Costella swam a lifetime best 16:36.56 and Ryan Hudson clocked a 16:44.63.


Barber also placed fifth in the 800 freestyle on Wednesday. The next day, he finished 13th in the 400 individual medley and went 4:08.95 in the 400 freestyle Friday.


Mean while, Carson teammate Evan Fischer finished 11th in the 400 I.M. with a 4:37.67 clocking.


Fischer, a Carson High graduate who is headed to the University of Tennessee this fall, also turned a time of 2:29.0 in the 200 breaststroke on Friday and 2:14.09 in the 200 I.M. Saturday.


Costella swam 8:46.16 and Hudson 8:54.66 in the 800 freestyle.
