Brother convicted in restaurant slaying

LAS VEGAS - One of two brothers charged in a 1996 slaying outside a local restaurant was convicted Friday, just one day after his brother was arrested on identical charges in New Mexico.

Jurors found Geovanny Torres guilty of charges that include first-degree murder with use of a deadly weapon and attempted murder with use of a deadly weapon.

District Judge John McGroarty on Aug. 16 will sentence Torres, who faces a minimum of 42 years in prison.

Torres and his brother, Carlos Torres, were charged in the Dec. 30, 1996, shooting of Alfonso Lazaro in the parking lot of El Matador Restaurant.

Geovanny Torres was arrested April 5 in Las Vegas, N.M. Carlos Torres was arrested Thursday in Albuquerque, N.M. The brothers are originally from Cuba.
