Josh Brekken, Martin Ellis and the doubles team of Carl Schulz and John McDonald picked up victories for Carson High School, but it wasn't enough to keep pace with a potent Galena lineup Friday afternoon in the first round of the Northern 4A zone boys tennis tournament.

Galena, the High Desert League champion, scored a 19-3 victory at home against Carson to advance into the tournament semifinals against either South Tahoe or Reed on Monday. If the Grizzlies win their semifinal, they will advance to the championship round and be assured of making their third state tournament appearance in the last four years.

Even though Carson has now been eliminated from the team portion of the zone tournament, six Senators will move into the individual boys play on Thursday, starting at 2 p.m. at the Plumas Tennis Center in Reno.

Brekken, a sophomore, and Ellis, a senior, are entered in the singles play. Schultz, a junior, and McDonald, a sophomore, are entered in the doubles bracket along with the team of sophomore Andy Araza and freshman Jeff Knaus.
