FLORISTON - One of two people found dead inside a vehicle near Truckee died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, the Nevada County sheriff said Wednesday.

The bodies were found Tuesday inside a 1984 Subaru with Nevada plates at the firing range at Boca Reservoir. An unidentified caller reported finding the vehicle.

When officers arrived on the scene, they could see the body of a deceased male in the driver's seat.

On Wednesday afternoon, Nevada County Sheriff Keith Royal said the man appeared to have died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the upper torso. Officers also found a shotgun in the car.

The body of a second victim, a female, was found in the back seat of the vehicle. The woman's body was wrapped in layers of bedding and the cause of death has yet to be determined, Capt. Gary Jacobson said.

Neither victim has been identified. However, Royal said both victims appeared to be middle-aged.

"We are working diligently to identify the victims," Jacobson said.

According to Royal, investigators believe the car had been at Boca Reservoir at least five days due to the lack of snow under the vehicle.

Autopsies will be conducted in Auburn to determine the exact causes of death, Jacobson said.
