Douglas County residents got a chance to look at the range of services available at Minden Medical Center during an open house Saturday.

The Hyde Street Swing Section played swing music and blues while staffers from the various independent medical offices offered refreshments and explained what each office had to offer.

Physical therapist Richard Stephenson, president of High Desert Therapists Inc., said he has been happy with the response his clients have had to the new location in the two-story building on Ironwood Drive, built by Carson-Tahoe Hospital.

"We moved here from down Highway 395 when it opened in October 1998," Stephenson said. "I think we were the second tenant here."

Peggy Jones of of the hospital's marketing department said most of the space in the clinic is now leased. The remaining office areas will probably be occupied within three or four months, she said.

Several of the specialists in the clinic presented informational lectures during the open house, on topics ranging from prostate cancer screening to "golf in motion." Pediatrician Kathi Amrhein spoke about attention deficit disorder in children and the various treatments being employed.

While Carson-Tahoe Hospital owns the building, all the medical services including urgent care are provided by private medical firms, Stephenson said.

Several of the doctors and therapists also have offices in Carson City. Carson Medical Group, for example, has been staffing an obstetrician/gynecologist clinic with five specialists at Minden Medical Center soon after it opened. Recently, Carson Medical has added pediatric care provided by four pediatricians.
