Scavenger hunt supports local assistance groups

Supplies are looking better at the Friends In Service Helping food closet and the Classy Seconds thrift store after a couple dozen teenagers went door to door Saturday.

Students from St. Teresa of Avila Catholic Church's CCD Christian education classes spread throughout Carson City to collect donations of food, personal care products and other items for their fourth annual scavenger hunt.

"Some years we have more kids, sometimes fewer, but we always seem to collect enough to fill three cars," said organizer Janet Francoeur, who works at St. Teresa's.

Seven classes of seventh- and eighth-grade students participated, with each class in a different neighborhood. Many of the class teams had distributed fliers in their designated neighborhoods in advance and residents had left their donations in labeled bags on their porches.

The nonperishable foods were taken to the FISH kitchen and food closet. Personal care items, paper products, some small furniture items, toys, games and puzzles went to Classy Seconds, the thrift shop operated by Advocates to End Domestic Violence.

After the scavenger hunt, the CCD teachers were busy tabulating each class's results by assigning point values to each item. The class that has the highest number of points per member will be treated to a pizza party or similar reward.
