Carson volleyball sweeps past McQueen

The Carson High volleyball team made sure it didn't falter heading into another huge match.


Carson swept McQueen 15-9, 15-10, 15-7 on Tuesday to improve to 5-1. The Senators will host Galena on Thursday.


The Grizzlies are coming off a five-game win over Douglas on Tuesday at home in a showdown between two of Northern Nevada's best teams.


"That should be a good match," said coach Daryl James about Galena.


Against McQueen, Rachael DeRiemer had another outstanding all-around match with 12 kills, three digs and five aces. Shannon Devereaux had 10 kills and three digs, Megan Anderson had six kills and four blocks, Kaitlin Brush had five kills and Tabitha Adams had 34 assists.


"We played O.K.," James said. "We didn't do anything really bad. We passed pretty well. We played good defense. It just seemed like we were in slow motion."


GALENA 3, DOUGLAS 2


Galena (18-4, 6-0) held off Douglas (7-3, 3-1) 15-9, 13-15, 15-13, 11-15, 15-12. Joanna Hixon had 21 kills for Galena while Whitney Dibble had 11 kills, Chelsea Appelbaum had nine kills, Whitney Haller had five kills and Lauren Wallace added four kills. Wallace also set up the attack with 40 assists.


For Douglas, Chelsey Myers had 14 kills, Jencie LeJeune had 12 kills, Andrea Honer had 11 kills and Emily Haas added eight kills.


Wallace had an outstanding all-around match as she and Dibble each added eight blocks. Jenny Burrows had five blocks, Appelbaum had four blocks and Melissa Reaney and Hixon each had two blocks. For Douglas, Haas had seven blocks and LeJeune added four blocks.


In addition, Wallace had 26 digs. Hixon had 17 digs, Appelbaum had 12 digs, Stacy Schierberl and Teresa Miller each had 11 digs, Carly Kolesar had 10 digs and Haller added seven digs.


In serving, Appelbaum served for 15 points, Wallace served for 13 points, Kolesar served for eight points and an ace and Haller served for six points and two aces and Schierberl served for six points. Myers served for four aces for Douglas.


DAYTON 3, FERNLEY 2


Dayton outlasted Fernley in a marathon match, winning 16-14, 15-8, 8-15, 14-16, 20-18.


Bri Savage had 10 kills and three blocks, Lacey Sayre served for seven points and two aces, Kia Galindo had three kills and a strong night at the net defensively, Rachel Hurt had nine kills and one block and served for 11 points, Ashley Reese had four kills, three blocks and 15 assists and served for six points, Bridgette Galles served for 13 points and an ace and had four kills and 16 assists, Carey Kytle also had an outstanding game at the net with nine blocks and five kills, Amanda Ring served for seven points and two aces and had three kills and Danielle Rodriguez served for 14 points and four aces and had two kills for Dayton.


For Fernley, Tara Zimmerman had 10 kills and served for three aces, Angela Azacarte had four kills and Kari Kornegay had five kills.


Dayton won the junior varsity match 15-11, 15-4 while Fernley won the freshman match 15-12, 14-16, 15-5.
